K1100LT centre stand

Postby BarryM » Sat Mar 18, 2017 9:43 am

Went to ride off last night and there was a very worrying clatter as I pulled away. Turns out both centre stand springs broke at the same time! I've found them on MotoBins but just wondering if I should be ordering new bolts and spacers at the same time. The rear wheel just brushes the ground when on the centre stand so just wondering if this is a common wear problem?

TIA

Hi
I dont know (check realoem.com) but on the R100R there are Top Hat spacers which really improved my stand when I changed them

Interesting, I use realoem for my car all the time but never thought of it for the bike. I'll take a look

K1100LT centre stand

Well I looked on Realoem and see the centre stand bolts onto a bracket above and then read on another forum to add spacers to lower the stand height. Have ordered the springs as a quick fix but will assess the condition of the stand next weekend and see if I need spacers or bushes as well.

Fitted the new springs and all good for now. Read a brilliant tip about how to fit them which involved using a pair of molegrips and a large screwdriver - an absolute doddle

Ok, I'll try and explain but it's much easier to see in a video (which is beyond my capability).

Hook the spring over one end post and click the molegrips over the 'free' post which should create a small gap you can fit the business end of the screwdriver into.
Pop the screwdriver shaft through the free end of the spring and then place the business end of screwdriver in the post/molegrip gap.
Expand spring by levering screwdriver and spring end will slide down screwdriver shaft and onto the post.
Remove screwdriver and molegrips with no skinned knuckles

Or, of course, you could just make life simple and but a spring puller...

I've never heard of a spring puller but this method took 10secs and worked brilliantly with what I had in the toolbox!
