K100

Postby snowy » Tue May 16, 2017 3:44 pm

Hi Gents, I have recently purchased a K100 based trike ( with IRS, so much more comfortable on my ample stern) he he, sorry I digress, whilst making so repairs to it I found what appears to be another 'brain' in the tail piece, fitted as standard in a BMW carrier, I am thinking possibly an ABS brain, there is no ABS fitted but the spare front brake disc has a reluctor ring fitted, I have refitted that disc, lets face it the LT from which the trike derived had 2 discs fitted as standard because of the weight and the trike weighs in at 360kgs, so at last the question is 'What is this extra brain and can it be removed?
cheers

Look for a BMW Part Number (xx xx x xxx xxx) on the item and put that Part Number into the RealOEM Parts Fiche, Part Nr Application Search box:

http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/select

That will identify the item and show on what vehicles and where it was used.

Leave out any spaces when entering the Part Number!

Well gents, I have identified it as the ABS control unit, next question is, can I junk it, no abs fitted to trike, still using the drums from the donor sierra on the back and will be using original twin disc from the k100lt on the front, just got to make up the link brake pipe.
Thanks once again to all, Ced in particular.

Hi Snowy,

Your K100 would have used the ABS1 system which has the twin Modulator units mounted on the footpeg plates.

If your ABS Control Unit is connected up, then disable it by disconnecting its connector and see if anything works differently.

I believe that the ABS1 Controller is independent of anything else except possibly for the Bulb Monitor.

See this article ABS1 section by Anton Largiader which explains the relationship with the Bulb Monitor and the ABS1 system:

http://www.largiader.com/abs/absfault.html

If nothing changes when you have the ABS1 Controller disconnected then the unit can be removed.
I would leave its harness alone unless you need to remove it but wrap the connector in self-amalgamating tape to keep moisture out as it will be carrying +12v.
This gives you the option of possibly fitting ABS1 to your trike at a later date.

Hi Ced, nothing exists of the AB1 system on the trike now, so I will do the test like you suggest, as an aside have you seen the price of 2nd hand units, unbelievable.
cheers once again
Snowy
