K75 final drive oil seal replacement?

Postby andymcg » Fri Jun 16, 2017 11:46 pm

I have just removed the final drive on "Walter" my 30 year old, 55,000 mile K75s to check the spine lubrication at a tyre change.
There haven't been any problems and no external signs of oil leaks.
It was a joy to find that all the bolts that needed to be removed had been nicely copper greased by the previous owner and it all came a part nicely.
On removing the final drive from the swing arm about a teaspoon full of clean oil drained out and there was some in the recess round the splines, which were still lubricated with a white grease and didn't seem worn.
I am not sure if I should be replacing the seal which looks rather a faff in the Clymer manual that says it needs several special BMW tools like threaded ring remover.
My questions are:
1. Is some leakage acceptable and should I just put it back and keep an eye on the level?
2. Do you need the special tools? has anyone got them that I can borrow?

Sometimes I wonder if it is really a good idea to take things apart to look for problems, or if ignorance is better, until something breaks!

I see, you didn't believe me when I told you I'd lubed both ends of the shaft with Optimol only weeks before I sold it you!

I feel like the sailor on board Titanic shouting icebergs, no one ever listens to me.

Hi John, I believed you and was pleased to see all in order. But had seen advice to re-lube each rear tyre change.
If I hadn't looked, just put new tyre on and replaced wheel I wouldn't be aware of or worried about leak!
Now I know it is there I think I need to fix it. Seal is inexpensive just what is entailed in doing it. Either myself or a professional who has home lots of them.

Well Andy, I wouldn't be doing that for a teaspoon of oil!

When you start pulling your bike apart there is a risk of introducing other problems - "if it ain't broke don't fix it!"

Hi Andy,
For a teaspoon of oil I would not bother. If you check every time you put a tyre on and keep an eye on the level then I'd not be concerned too much.
If you really feel the need to do the job then I have the tools.

Thanks for the sage advice. I will lubricate the splines with molybdenum disulphide paste and re-assemble and refill the drive and just keep a close eye on oil level.
If I do need to replace the seal I will ask to borrow Phil 's tools.
This is the weather for riding not spannering!

Thanks again
Andy
