I've got an ex cop K75rt 60k on the clock ,arrive home from work turned off the engine ,opened the garage started the engine again and it went bang.
A large ploom of smoke engulfed me and the engine failed to start. I left it for 2 minutes and tryed again bike started put in the garage and left it. I have had a look at it since and some small spots of oil have appeared beneath it.
Anybody got any ideas as to whats happened ?And is it going to be expensive?

Did you try doin a compression test on it?

Could be a holed piston? K's don't like air leaks into the crank case so that could cover the non starting???

Bang= probably throttle position switch needs adjusting

Oil on inspection afterwards= was it already there?

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys,current weather conditions are hampering things though as I have to carry out any work outside and its blowing a gayle with horizotal rain. Ive asked a friend for the kit to carry out compression test soon.
I,ve never had any oil leaks on this bike before and from what i can see so far the oil appears to have blasted out horizontally on both sides of the engine block. Ive not tried to start the engine again yet just in case i do any further damage. Ill keep you updated as progress is made any further suggestions greatfully recieved.

Well the weather has lightened up so i've had a look. I've checked for water ingress in the oil, none. i've removed the spark plugs oil around thethread but not around the spark area no carbon build up or any other damage. coolant level normal and no further oil leaks. . started it up ,went first time and sounds sweet. took it for a ride approx 5 miles (just in case i had to walk back) responsive not strange noises and no bangs.spoke to a mechanic who suggested a possible build up of oil ?
i just dont know .Going to try the work run tomorrow and see how i get on .i ll keep you posted as to how successful it is

K75's as most BMW use waste spark ignition, they spark on exhaust as well as power. I suspect some petrol got into one of the pots or the exhaust. I've had similar happen on the oil head once. Very alarming but no damage.

If I'd read the bloody post right I'd have suggested a build up of oil cos the bike was hot and you had probably left it on the sidestand?

I read it that the bike hadn't started

Well you Guys certainly gave engine restore a hard time! Pity someone didn't actually put it in an engine and try it! I mean the guy gave you a litre sample!
I've used it in 6 bikes of lowest miles being 36,000 highest 110,000 miles and my Merc 190D (175,000 miles) and My espace (145,000 miles)

Improvements were:- Merc ~ reduced hydraulic tappet noise after about 300 miles, and consumption up from 37 ish to 41 ish, Easier starting when warm and reduced oil usage? Only changes made were add ametech stuff and I didn't even change the engine oil/filter because it had only been in there 500 miles!

R80ST ~ cold starting was bad, Idle was bad and torque was badly down, I didn't change the oil or filter cos It was coming out for a strip if it didn't work And it did It took about 200 miles but changes did occur and kept on getting better

Basically all the vehicles did improve NONE were immediate and I think the ST showed the earliest signs of easier breathing

But Hey I'm just one person, and I found it helped my problems I do begrudge the price but at around 12.50 a litre engine size I reckoned it was worth a shot?

Yeah, fine. No problem with that.

Somewhere in the thread (and forgive me, it's be a few weeks since I read it all the way through) somebody finds out that it wrecks *something*. Somebody else finds out that it sludged up the engine. It's sent off to an oil testing place and the pro of x years says don't put it in.

Yeh thats fine,No problem, But lets face it, it would be a better warning if some one had actually put it in an engine and had wrecked it, which it appears they didn't?

I don't know your oil expert or you, but, I have used this product, whereas I would not use slick 50 or STP due to my own bad experiences I find this has helped MY older high mileage engines, Simple as that!

So, Back to you? Are you going to fill in the rest of your details and tell us what bike(s) you have and about the roads around you? Good places to visit and great places to eat?
Or was your primary reason for joining the forum to slag off the Engine restore stuff???

Nope, that was the only reason. Just trying to save somebody the expense of a new engine.

Did you read the whole thread? There's some stuff in there somewhere saying that it's really not a good idea.

I put the additive in and all is well. Thanks for your advice on this one Beemer jay. I must say though that at the time I had just put it in the other guys from the forum who were advising against had me worried . 1000m on and all is well .
