Low Mileage Airheads?

Postby Geoff888 » Fri Mar 05, 2010 12:34 pm

There's much talk on here about the high milers.
Any low milers out there?
I'm lucky enough to have found an '81 R100RS with only 44,000 miles.
Anyone else??

Phil,
That's unused.
What sort of stuff did you have to replace to make it roadworthy?

How about 18,000 on my 1992 R80RT mono. Genuine with all old MoT's. I am using it more than the first two owners.

My last two R80's were 22K and 33K respec.
My pal just sold his r100 with 31K miles. They're certainly out there.

My last r80 was one owner with full history from the day of purchase [ dealer receipt ] and had been stored in a utility room within the house for 5 years! =D>

Dont seem to make much difference,
R100 1981 - 69K
R100S 1978 - 42K
R100RT 1979 - 45K
R100RS 1978 - 30K
R100RS 1977 - 24K
R100 Mono Cafe Racer 1988 - 90K
Guzzi 1000 1977 - 55K (sorry)
I find if they're low miles i quite like to keep them that way and dont use them as much. The cafe racer just gets thrashed all year in all weather, cleans up great. change of oil every 600ish miles, with filter every four changes. runs like a swiss watch. i just love BM's.

'77 R100RS with 36000km on it, just acquired from my brother-in-law (original owner) after sitting unused for 15yrs. Didn't take much to get it running, had to love the shower of rust flakes out the exhaust when it fired up. Lots of oil from front to back, so all gaskets being replaced, along with exhaust system. Strange flat in rear wheel so that will have to be rolled. After that, just new rubber & fluids and it should be ready to hit the road.

Interesting that we now talk in terms of 50k being low mileage for an airhead which I suppose is reasonable given the age of the bikes. Don't think you will find too many Jap machines in the showrooms with anything like that sort of use. Unfairly I might say. I did hear of a chap who had done 800,000 miles as a courier with a Honda VFR on the original motor and most of the big Kwak and Yamaha's can easily top 150,000 miles without any bother.
I guess its the sunday morning brigade who do the damage with year old bikes traded with 4k or less on the clock.
I nearly traded my R100S for a K100 brick when they first came out until I discovered that Slocombes intended to sell my bike in pieces. "With 70,000 on the clock no one will ever buy it!" Brian Slocombe told me. I put my cheque book back in my pocket and cancelled the order! I still have my Boxer now with 257,000 on the clock and as good as ever.

R65 RT - 1983 - 39,000 miles - £950!

Mind you, it had stood standing still in a garage for 20 years after the original owner - an aerospace engineer! - had passed away.

He'd laid the bike up so well that it didn't take much to get it back on the road - the Cosmic Bike Company doing its stuff for me once more...Bless....

Mind you most airheads go back to 0 when they pass 100K, and I remember from my past that it is quite easy to turn back an airhead clock.

Hi,
I bought my R100 RS in 2008 after passing my test with only 17774 miles on the clock :D From the documents i got given, I found that the bike is a october 81 model but wasn't bought until 83. The owner then did 15k miles and sold it in 84 to the 2nd owner who had the bike on the road until 1995 (he did the rest of the 2500miles in those years) - The bike was then sat in the corner of a garage until 08 when i bought it for 250quid :D

Hi all, I just found a 84 R100RT with 16,074 on it. Besides missing the fairing, and the paint being beat up a bit, it is in SCARY original condition, I don't think the rear passenger pegs have ever been stood on. Just changed out the transmission, rear drive and driveshaft oil, currently running some SeaFoam thru the tank, will be changing the oil and plugs today, will go thru the carbs after this tank of fuel is gone, but so far I love the bike, but I sure do miss a windshield! My recent find is a '76 R60/6 on 17700miles, with enough old mot's for me to believe it's genuine.

One month ago purchased 1989 R100RS- 27000 miles. Taxed, MOT, good tyres, service history. With last owner 10+years,all MOT to prove it.
Picked it up from his place and plonked it straight onto the motorway for 105 miles at 85+mph traffic permitting. Still searching for horrors, but so far only found a 'crackomatic' coil and the rubber steering damper access grommet missing, it's brilliant !

1979 R100RS just under 25k miles. Local bike with two owners, one had it from new till 2007 but it had spent years stored in his shed. Second owner put it back on the road but hardly used it.
Oh, and I thought it was just a white RS with pinstripes and a red nose but emailed BMW to see if it was a genuine Morosport and they reccon it is.

Low mileage?
The previous owner of my R75/6 bought it at six months old and only used it one day a year for the Jumbo rally from 1976 onwards - it had 22,000 on the clock (35,000 now).

Hi

My 1983 R100RS has 44500 miles on and all the MOT's to prove which I thought was very low, but by some of the above posts, it has relativley high miles.

Barry Robson, the York based BM dealer took a R100RS mono in as PX and it had only just over 8K miles. It is spotless even down to the pipes hardly blued. I think from memory it was either an 'H' or 'G' registration. He now owns the bike himself along with his low miles R75/5.
