electronic bean can

Postby snowy » Tue Aug 29, 2017 4:16 pm

Hi all
can anybody tell me if it would be any advantage to remove points been can and replace it with the newer type, I have the additional wiring plug that connects to the amp wiring already on my wiring harness, see earlier notes ref what this plug was!.
I have not started the bike yet still waiting for bits to arrive, hopefully tomorrow, so I don't know if the existing bean can is working or not, I have a bean can, amp and wiring so no real cost would involved ( thank god).
just wondering if there would be any benefit or not.
Thanks in advance

The advantage of newer ignition is it pretty much stays in tune. No maintenance; virtually. No points to burn, no condensor to go.

The advantage of points is their inherent simplicity. I prefer points because of this.... well, this and a scary incident with a after market electronic ignition on an old Honda!

Of course my R80 has the later bean can due to age and I haven't had to play with it yet. I've had it off to do the timing chain, but you just shove it back on and time the bike.
My R65 has points and I won't change. Let's throw something out there to muddy the waters  if I won, or was given a brand new, recommended electronic ignition for Schorsch..... ooh...... very tempted
Best roads: 623 Burgos to Santander. A back road to Metz; can't remember which!
Schorsch 1978-80 R65 - bit of a Shetland pony; frisky and naughty.
Too many bikes have come and gone, trying to be sensible now!

I'm unsure if the EI bean can would work retrofitted, but there is an EI setup from Emerald Isle that fits. They make the newer digital EI bean can.

Hi snowy
I am not sure where you are but there is an owner in Yorkshire having problems with the later set up who may be interested in the parts.

Points are cheap & simple but need replacing from time to time, Later set-up just works (Or does'nt, then you are stuffed & skint)

I'm wondering if it's possible to go the other way with my new 81RS? I'd like to have points ignition, never had an issue with it on my pre-81 boxers. Can it be done easily?

OP.: You will also need the ignition module and even then there will be little benefit without the correct coil

Simon: Not difficult but coils would also need to be changed to go from electronic to points.

I stuck with points on my 1980 R100T because they are nice & simple & they work. The only mod I might make in future is to fit a Boyer Bransden inductive discharge electronic module. This removes the need for the condenser and improves the life of the points.
