Replacement for Valeo starter

Postby k100john » Sat Sep 16, 2017 7:03 pm

The starter on my 93 R80RT has failed. I fitted a new Valeo in 2006 when the original failed. Now this one has gone - same fault: detached magnets.
I am reluctant to spend another £150+ on Valeo. Looking at alternatives, I see a brand I have not previously heard of - Arrowhead. New for under £100.
I am guessing this is a Chinese product - not necessarily a bad thing these days. And the price is attractive.
Has anyone any experience of this?

If your magnets are not smashed up or the armature damaged, you could consider re-gluing them on with an epoxy resin.

You need to ensure that the magnets are correctly placed in the housing such that the original North pole/South pole orientation is preserved - it may alternate between the magnets.

You can check how the remaining magnets are orientated/alternated by using a magnetic compass passed over the ends of the existing magnets - re-glue your magnets back in the same manner.

Also, the later Valeo Starter Motors have now been fitted with clips to retain the field magnets as well as them being glued to overcome the problem of detaching magnets.

Thanks for the suggestion Ced. I did consider the re-glueing option, but my past experience with Aralditing things onto smooth mild steel was not happy.
As I use the RT for Continental touring, I need a degree of reliability. I've decided to order an Arrowhead starter and I'll see what I think when it arrives.

I got the Toyota truck starter and adapter from Motoworks after the second Valeo died ( after being told it would be OK as it was the new type - hah) and that not only starts it like never before, but could probably turn another half dozen over at the same time! Superb. Money well spent.

I've just bought one of the pattern starters from Motobins. It'll go in next week I hope. They get reasonable reports.
Cheers, Steve.

The Arrowhead starter arrived today. Impressed that the box is marked 'made in China'.
Appears to be an exact clone of the Valeo starter - at least the brushes, commutator and solenoid look identical. I did not drill out the rivets to examine the magnet fixing!
Fitted easily, and it spins the engine noticeably more briskly than the old starter.
If it lasts for 12 years like the Valeos did, then I shall be content. Actually if I can still ride a bike at 83 I'll be more than content!
