ENGINE / GEARBOX REBUILD RECOMMENDATIONS

Postby Luddite » Thu Jul 29, 2010 2:39 pm

I've owned my R50 for around 25 years now, rode it back from Germany on BFPO plates. It was ridden regularly if not daily until about ten years ago, when it started to get a bit tired. I think now may be the time to resurrect the beast and bring it back up to its former glory. I'm a professional engineer and am fully capable of carrying out the work myself, but being a professional engineer, I don't have the time available to do it. So, I want to farm out some of the bigger tasks to specialists; I'm looking to get the engine and drivetrain rebuilt by someone who knows their way around the older BMW engines, rather than a non-specific engine shop.

Can anyone offer any advice or recommendations about a specialist offering quality engine, gearbox and bevel box rebuilds, please?

Roger Bennet in Huddersfield : 01484 536126. He loves doing them and has the correct tooling and can rebore etc. He's been doing them since the sixties, good rates too. On hols for the next 2 or 3 weeks though.
I think Bob Porecha in London still does rebuilds on them and John Lawes at BEMW, Derby probably can too. These guys all specialise in BMWs exclusively in Blighty.
I like bikes. Old bikes mainly. And a few other things.

Thanks for the reply. I'll give Mr. Bennet a call I think. He was recommended to me years ago, but as it was years ago I assumed he was no longer trading.

Thanks again.
