Looking forward to it Ced, I've completed the ABS removal but haven't got the speedometer working yet, now it'd stopped working before the absectomy so I can't blame that, maybe you'll have some idea of the electronics behind it.

Hi Keith - see this link:

I think 'Jaythro' once posted about the 'loose' tone wheel on the final drive unit causing the speedo to fail...... Jaythro?

Northern Meet this Sunday 30th July 2017

Postby Ruralman » Sun Jul 30, 2017 4:21 pm

Well that's me back from another Northern Meet, this one was in Hawick, in attendance was:-

Ced (Galactic Greyhound)
Keith (Ruralman)
Martin (Tango)
Neil (Neil)

Martin arrived first and I never noticed him already ensconced at another table but he noticed my arrival and moved to our normal table.
Neil was next to arrive from Newcastle then Ced arrived from Dumfries and Galloway.
As usual we discussed many various subjects including Club business, Electric Vehicles, FarmerJohns USA adventure, Wet Weather gear and various other subjects.
Thanks to Ced, Martin and Neil for their good company!
Regards
Keith

Another good Northern Meet despite the local showers on the way to Hawick and back!

Surprisingly, on the way there between Waterbeck and Langholm I came across a PEACOCK on the road in the middle of nowhere!

Good company and chat made for a pleasant lunch.

Afterwards, Marty [Tango] and I left together heading for Langholm and, about 4 miles outside Hawick, came across a couple of bikers from Sweden stopped at the roadside.

One of their bikes had a puncture (screwnail) in the front tubed and spoked wheel.

They had called their breakdown insurance and were awaiting assistance arriving.
Unfortunately they were not carrying tyre levers and a spare tube.
They had a can of tyre foam but were not happy about using it on the front - whether it would even have sealed a torn tube on a spoked wheel is debateable anyway.

Being a Sunday in the Scottish Borders it looked like a night in Hawick was on the cards until a new tyre and tube could be fitted.

They still had a fortnight of their holiday left and were heading for Wales - we wished them well - at least it wasn't raining.

Back safe and sound, good to see the usual suspects and met Neil for the first time.
Parted company with Ced at Langholm after stopping and offering assistance to a couple of Swedish persons. One of whom had suffered a gashed tyre. They were waiting for their insurance company to sort out a rescue.
To say the ride back was in varied weather would be an understatement. A6 over Shap summit in gale force winds was interesting.
Cheers

Enjoyed the day out, good chat and had a good ride - sunshine all the way home against all the forecasts and not too much wind (weather-wise).

Tango,

I was intrigued by your conversation today about your finding of Commonwealth War Graves (CWG) while exploring a back-road on your visit to Hawick.
Here is the location of the hill road turn-off from the A7 to Eskdalemuir just North of Langholm we spoke of:
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/dir//55.2 ... m2!4m1!3e0

However, I can only find a WWI & WWII Memorial at Eskdalemuir:
https://www.tracesofwar.com/sights/1857 ... lemuir.htm

I think you said you had found the graves in an old cemetery somewhere along this hill road from the A7 to Eskdalemuir?
There is an old cemetery in the Westerkirk Parish Church in the village of Bentpath on the hill road to Eskdalemuir:
https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/Wes ... -3.0828372

You can see it better if you switch to 'Satellite' view using the Side Panel Menu.

This cemetery is listed in the Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) website:
http://www.cwgc.org/find-a-cemetery/cem ... CHURCHYARD

You can search for War Graves on the CWGC website here:
http://www.cwgc.org/find-a-cemetery.aspx
You can search starting with just a single field entry and then narrow it down if required.

Do you think it was the Westerkirk Old Churchyard cemetery you found wherein lies the CWGC grave of Pte.John Fletcher Grieve, Age 24, Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders?

Hi Ced,

Yes did exactly that google map search myself, and it was the old cemetery at Bentpath. I remember now, passing a horse race training oval, where the track from the A7 turns to gravel. I turned left there and rejoined the B709. Turning Rt off the 709 to Bentpath down to the cemetery turn Rt, that road led to the estate grounds which turns to gravel about 2 miles in. That gravel track I have since discovered returns to the race track.

Well it whiled away a half an hour in the sunshine. Might do a bit more next time.

Thanks for the confirmation Marty!

I'll have a look next time I am in the area.

The single CWGC grave of Pte. John Fletcher Grieve in the cemetery is a Commando grave (No. 9 Commando) his parents lived by Langholm.

No. 9 Commando:

Hi George,
Thanks, this whole conversation started because I mistakenly thought that the total grave yard was under the upkeep of the commission. I hadn't realised that they were listed because one or more military personal are buried in a grave yard.

I am however trying to find out where my grandfather fought in WW1 without much success. He was one of the lucky ones wounded and repatriated.

See you Thursday

cheers

His service record will likely show where he was. As NOK you should be able to obtain IF it still exists - many were lost in a fire.

Hi Phil,

Thanks, I have only just started researching , and have his medal index card, next job is the service record, but as you say many were destroyed by fire in WW 11.
