Recommendation for a Respray?

Postby martinwR65 » Wed Jul 05, 2017 11:43 am

Hi folks, apologies for my first post being here rather than an introduction.

I'm new to BMW ownership, having just bought a 1978 R65 as an ongoing project. I'm really enjoying riding it a lot at the moment, but the paintwork pretty poor, and rather than wait till a more comprehensive rebuild over the winter, I want to get on and get the tank, side panels etc painted as soon as I can.

Could someone recommend a good painter to me?

I would like to go back to the bike's original silver-beige with a black pinstripe, so nothing fancy, but a decent job.

Thanks in anticipation :)

Hi
first off-- Welcome, next-- where in Scotland are you, if you put your location in your profile you will get more local advice, which with getting stuff to a painter is important.

Hi George, thanks for the welcome.

I've added my location to my profile...I'm near Buckie in Moray.

Cheers! :)

I've found a place called Graham Dawson's in Aberdeen, reasonable price and can do it next week, so have booked it in there. Will report back.

Well, here we are nearly 2 months later and no bits. I've been told that my paintwork will be ready by the end of this week, but I've heard that before. :(

Let's see what the quality's like...worth waiting for?

Being fobbed off now with reasons that don't make sense.
Definitely not recommended.

Finally got the stuff back today. I have to say, a very good job has been done. However, it's taken nearly 3 months which is about 2 months longer than estimated, and whilst I understand they had staff issues, and that the original DIY paint job on the tank caused some problems with paint reacting, it became apparent in the end that I was a bit of a weekend job. They were prioritising other stuff all the time until I put my foot down.
The price was good, however, about 30% cheaper than Dream Machine quoted.
