2001 F650GS front fork lowering

Postby Bandytales » Wed Jul 28, 2010 10:15 am

Hi, has anyone got information for lowering the front forks.
I'm thinking of shortening the upper spacer and fitting a spacer between the lower damper spring and the damper.

Any thought, advice, observations......We need to shrink this bike! (it's for a 4'11" rider who wants to be able to flat foot as much as possible at standstill).
The seat is stripped down to it's plastic base!
Next we'd like to increase ground clearance caused by lowering the front & rear suspension.

We know we will have to shorten / re work the sidestand.
The 'up' stops on the centrestand need to be ground back to get it to go up higher, but maybe ultimately the centrestand will have to come off because to get the ground clearance the stand will probably foul the chain.

We are going to fit 2" Kuba links and maybe even fit a shorter rear shock.

Has anyone raised the footpegs, gear lever and brake lever?
If so, how.

Looking forward to hearing from you all with ideas.

Have a look on Realoem or ETK and you will see the parts BMW list for the official lowering option.

I think you should be able to manufacture or adapt parts to achieve the desired result on the front.

The rear end is lowered by using a shorter shock. BMW provide one as do Hagon or you can purchase a lower spring from Hyperpro or other suspension specialists.

Again BMW supply a shorter centre stand and side stand to suit and as with the official front and rear modifications they come at a hefty price so your plan to modify them would be best.

As for footpegs MV Verholen do a footrest lowering kit but I see no reason why it could not be used the other way up to raise them.

Can't remember by heart, but either Touratech or Wunderlich provides smaller rims/wheels to convert to supermoto. That may be an alternative without messing about with the forks distances. I tried lowering a bit my dakar and it is difficult to get right the rear/front lowering balance and in some instances it causes a lot of shaking on the bars when accelerating op decelerating.
Good luck with it though!
