My new air head boxer engine transport.

Postby DEEP DIVER » Sat May 13, 2017 10:20 am

I have been thinking about some new transport for a while, and as my osteoarthritis in my hip makes it very sore to ride my bikes I looked outside the box!! I only rode my airhead twice last year. And one was for the mot.

Here is my new open air transport for the next few years??

Meet Herman the German. A Krauter Highway trike with a vw engine. All I have to get used to is not leaning in the corners.
Now let the leg pulling begin.

More street cred than a Reliant Robin.
Not that I can talk about Reliants, I had 4 of them altogether - but not all at the same time. :???:

Young feller!!! Jaythro you just made my day.

One thing I have found. While riding bikes for years cars just ignore you even with the lights on. 8-[ Rode Herman around on sunday and most of the cars were stopping to look. Grin factor is 9 out of 10.

Stick an 1800 twincarb with heated manifold and you Grin even more

p.s. might need a periscope to see around the headstock with the wheel in the air frequently :-)

You're gonna have all the disadvantages and none of the advantages of motorcycling, enjoy.

Well I have been having fun with Herman the trike. Had some good rides out and a fun run with around 200 bikes. I have found that I can take corners around 10/15 mph slower. Had a 60 mile ride with my granddaughter a few days back and she loved it. Funny thing she would never come on the back of any of my bikes. The engine and electrics have thrown up a few faults. Fixed one oil leak from the fuel pump and some bad earth corrosion on the wiring to the side lights and fuel gauge. All sorted now. Just have to sort out some way to mount my panniers on the rear in case we do any touring.

All the advantages of a bike, such as acute pain in his arthritic hip, you mean? :drunken:

I'd actually like a trike myself, but the tadpole trike appeals to me, front engined, two front wheels etc. They even build them with Beemer motors out in the breeze. Some bodywork shaped like a Spitfire....or maybe a Messerschmitt might be more suitable, with the BMW motor?

The way the seat is I can ride for around 70 miles ok. On my old airhead I am sitting upright and my left leg holding the tank gives a sharp pain. This makes the hip bone rub on my pelvis and after around 10 mins it fells like I have done 10 hours on the bike.
And yes you get wet and can not filter. But I am out in the fresh air and growing old disgracefully.

Hi
will you get to the Bubble car museum later this month? Only 115 miles from your place, so 70 miles, stop for a brew then only 50 miles to meet up

And you can wear nice warm waterproof biker gear if you choose. No need to get wet or cold. Heated seat and grips is a possibility too.
