The link below is for an excellent YouTube video which gives a basic understanding of how LEDs work.

Note however that LEDs used on vehicles are generally of the 12 volt type which is achieved by incorporating a built-in resistor inside the LED casing to limit the current flow through the LED.

These low current 12 volt LEDs are useful for Instrument Lighting, Diagnostic Testing of 12v power supplied by an ECU to Fuel Injectors/Fuel Pump Relay and for reading Fault Codes.
