My New R1200RT

Postby kent_instructor10 » Tue Feb 10, 2015 10:17 pm

As already seen by some, heres my new to me R1200RT SE twin cam. It came with brand new tyres, an oil cooler grille and pannier protectors. I have fitted BMW Authority engine protection bars and a PMR446 radio for work.

Having had two R1200RT single cams, then 8 months on an fjr1300, I can really appreciate the twin cam. I have read that some say there is not much between the single and the twin, but from my experience the twin is noticeably better.
The transmission and gear selection is smoother and slicker, the power delivery is smoother. The handling is amazing, probably no better than the single cam, but coming from the fjr the difference is vast.
Now the fjr was a good bike, but the R1200 is miles ahead in terms of less weight, better balance and handling. Comfort is subjective to the build of the rider, but for me, the comfort and ergonomics of the R1200 are spot on.
I am glad I went back to an RT!

Hi kent_instructor10,

That's a very nice bike and with a lot of 'presence'!

I wish you lots of happy miles on it.

Does your PMR446 radio double as a rider/pillion intercom?

Hi Ced,

Many thanks. My PMR is only a bike to bike, I rarely carry a pillion, but when i do i just give them another radio so i can at least talk to them!
It is a simple little system I built myself after messing about with old Autocoms but found the volume a little quiet and Autocom expensive. Basically I have built a loom which plugs into the radio, with a headset lead (using 4 pole nexus/Nato style connectors), external speaker, external in line volume switch, a handlebar push to talk which is momentary and latching and an LED on the dash which illuminates when transmitting. The radio is bike powered and is mounted in the glove box. As a rule is works very well. Clarity is important to me when training as you can imagine!

Thanks All. I really am obsessed by this bike! I normally wear my instructor kit, so hopefully dispels any "ole bill" thoughts! Retired from that lark a long time ago!

Kieth, i sure will keep you informed. Ive not had the pleasure K12LT, but having had 8 months on the fjr, I am so glad to be back on an RT, I just want to keep riding it! There's nothing not to like from my perspective! Did you have a single or double cam before?
