Scotland 8-10 September 2017

Postby george baker » Mon Nov 07, 2016 3:05 pm

Hi
Deposit Paid, Loch Ken again, Friday 8th – Sunday 10th September.

2 twins = 4 beds booked with the site, I can extend atm if you let me know you are coming. Confirmed numbers for Camping can be left until the middle of next year, but post here if you think you are a possible or probable just to give me a clue how much space to pencil in

It could be a quite while before the event calendar is updated and booking can be done on line. we usually do that close to the start of the year but I will work on getting it done sooner.

Come for the weekend, then join us for a ride to Falkirk on the Sunday, details to follow

I have been told there is an error so please read it and post here -- then I will amend it.

Hi
is that a commitment? If so all 4 beds have a name pencilled beside them.

I am not sure how we manage the deposit but will ask Nick our new Treasurer, he has only had the job for a week so it will take him time to get up to speed

ATM I can go back to the site and ask for some more rooms if anyone else want bed spaces, shout out before they sell them to other people.

Hi Keith,
if Pete & Alex confirm I think we should ask for another room, or two, what do you think?

we understand, I missed an event myself this year, there will be others. In fact I will continue working on something during the week and share as I get things sorted

September is the mating season for the Galloway Tree Haggis (Haggis gallovidiae) only found in the Galloway Forest.

It may be possible to arrange with Scottish Natural Heritage to visit a monitored site during the event:
http://www.snh.gov.uk/

Selkirk, about 70 miles east of Loch Ken, has an annual Haggis Hunt but this is for the common haggis, Haggis scotiae, and not the Tree Haggis which can only be found in the Galloway Forest:
http://www.grantkinghornpics.co.uk/slideshow403691.html

There have been reported sightings of the Tree Haggis by members camping at Loch Ken but this is believed to have actually been a sighting of the giant Midgie gallovidiae which breeds on the shoreline and is strongly attracted to alcohol.

Hi
I seem to remember that this year you warned us about Haggis running up legs to get under kilts. I suppose this is why the trip is off limit to Tango

That's why you must always carry a Sgian Dubh when wearing a kilt in the Galloway Forest:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sgian-dubh

If you do unfortunately get 'one up your kilt', the results can literally be quite devastating.

This is where the 'sporran' comes in.

In the Galloway Forest region, because of the dangers of Tree Haggis and kilts, especially when kilts were worn in the traditional manner without underwear, the sporran was used to both protect and preserve.

To protect against Tree Haggis, a 'Full Mask Sporran' was always worn with a Pine Marten head and 4 tassels.

The Pine Marten is the major predator of the Tree Haggis which run off whenever one is seen.

The preserve function of the sporran is used when your 'bits' have been painfully removed by a Tree Haggis.

If you were able to get to the Clan healer or Hedge-wife quick enough before mortification set in, there was a slim chance that your bits might be re-attached, at least for appearances sake.
This was the origin of the naming of 'Black John, Black Murdoch' etc who obviously took too long before getting help:

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sporran

These Clan Healers or Hedge-wives were extremely skilled, their practices based on the ancient Greek and Celtic physicians:
http://www.rcpe.ac.uk/heritage/celtic-medicine-scotland

This is also the reason why Robert the Bruce, King of Scotland who once lived in the Galloway Forest never wore the kilt, fearing the risk to his succession.

Tango's wife seems to be aware of the local Scottish history and is looking after her man!

My wife found this snap on my phone, an unfortunate victim looking for an alternative mode of transport to get him home after a nasty attack.

Hi
854 reads but no bookings except Keith

Neither Tango nor I will be there cos we each have a better offer. I know a couple of others who come to events are away and as we get older a few are sick atm.

John says he hopes to be there so you can ask him about the Texas-> Alaska trip

We can only organize events to suit members if you give us some feedback. So what is wrong with Loch Ken?
Too far for you to travel?
Wrong days, Friday, Saturday?
Not enough days to make the journey worthwhile, then stay longer?
Bad date, start of September, children back at school, midges?
Wrong type of event (camping & twin rooms), too rough, too posh?
Too dear, how much is fair?
Wrong country, Scotland which has great roads? We have done Wales & England this year!

Elections are due a month or so after this event, why not stand for the post of Events Coordinator? If you are elected you can set up the sort of event that suits you!

I've been following this thread and I have the dates in my calendar.
I'm not sure I can commit to a stay, but I intend to have a run through, even if only for a short visit. If I'm able to stay overnight I'll try to arrange something nearer the time.
If it's only me and Keith, I'll at least get to admire his new tent, and it would be great if our Alaskan adventurer could come up and regale us with his tales of derring do !

Wish I could make it, unfortunately, for that weekend family commitments dictate otherwise. Enjoyed last years event, and would go again.

Accommodations good enough for me, cheap and cheerful.
Location superb
Understandable that it's a bit far for southern dwellers to travel, but the event in Wales was not supported particularly well either.

With regard to up coming elections, discussions about events, club development, etc. etc. The club should have some form of annual meeting, but that suggestion got blown out of the water in another thread.

Hints of too much regimentation, formality, and the like, would spoil things I believe was the stumbling block.

So, I wouldn't overly worry George, no one going to an event is a major success, you can't get more relaxed than nothing happening.
