Yorkshire Lunch Meetings 2017 review

Postby P-K » Tue Nov 07, 2017 1:15 pm

Well people,

I'm back from my bit of winter sun (Been to the Algarve for a week.)
Time to review this years meetings and consider new places for 2018.

Any we want to drop ?
Any suggestions of new venues ?
Any parts of Yorkshire we seem to have missed out ?

Comments invited.

Most Yorkshire meets both here and in the BMW club seem to be all north of Harrogate. There is a world south of Leeds. Be nice if we had a meet up within reasonable distance of south Yorkshire. I know the roads down here aren't a patch on the Dales but it would be nice not to have quite so far to travel

Good idea.
Do you know of a nice cafe, farm shop, pub, that does good food, and isn't in a town or city ?
If you can locate somewhere that meets that criteria, I'll pop down and have a look

Grindleford cafe and the Bistro at Monyash are very popular with bikers. Also there are a couple of decent cafes in Eyam. Plenty of cafes and pubs in Castleton.
Can meet up if you want

Thanks for the input, but aren't Grindleford, Monyash and Eyam all in Derbyshire ?

I was thinking of something in the Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster area.

Yes you are quite right . Not too familiar with the areas you want so I contacted my cousin in Rotherham. This is her reply:

"The Travellers, Smithy Wood Rd, Thorpe Hesley just off the M1 jct 35 roundabout always used to welcome bikers. Three miles up the A629 from my home. Otherwise, had a word with son David who has an Air Con business and works regularly for the Forum Group, Sheffield. They have 9 pubs around this area, some more off the beaten track but very nice and well run. He suggests ringing them to enquire about possible venues for you. Contact is Carly on 0114 2720569 (Air Con Dave) gave you the number. www.truenorthbrewco.uk will show their sites (Crown and Anchor, Barnsley area and British Oak, Mosborough, Sth Sheffield are 2 I have been to). Mention Air Con Dave's 1st cousin once removed Allan Tootill. Hope this helps, Ruth"
see web site

Hope this helps

Berrys Farm Shop and Cafe near Aysgarth might be worth a try:

http://www.berrysfarmshop.com/

I would suggest dropping The star inn at Nafferton near Driffield.

Hi
No highjacking but trying to add some extra info.

I was thinking that since the First Thursday meet in South Lancs has a momentum I will ask if one of the regulars would become the "Host"

If so I will then come up with places that people who dont want to go Through or Around Manchester could get to.

My current thoughts are --=- at the Weekend, and rotating 3 counties of Cheshire (J&S?), Derbyshire (Whalley Bridge?) and South Yorks (Huddersfield Autojumble?).

Maybe we can find locations and dates that are accessible for the Yorkshire Lunch team?

My offers are subject to whoever is elected to the Events post agreeing

George, Huddersfield Autojumble- South Yorkshire.......Unless our boundaries have changed recently Huddersfield is in West Yorkshire and proud of it. Yorkshiremen are very partisan when it comes to NSEW or as I prefer the old 'Yorkshire Ridings'. Rant over!

Re Peter's suggestion above, if you were to drop the Star at Nafferton, how about the Goodmanham Arms, near Market Weighton, as a replacement?

Hi Al
Yorkshiremen are very partisan
I know, you can always tell a Yorkshire man

I had a mate from the part of Sheffield that was in Derbyshire-- grumpy about county boundary changes in 1972,

BTW, how's the K coming on?

The K is at a standstill at the moment George as my 'workshop' (daughter's garage) is full of building materials at the moment so i won't be working on it for a month or two.

I hope Peter's suggestion of dropping 'The Star' at Nafferton was only because they're not usually open
on a Tuesday early on in the year, we arrived this year when they weren't open and they opened especially
for four of us.
The food was lovely and very reasonably priced.
Excellent service!!!!

Agree with Keith's suggestion of the Goodmanham Arms, excellent food, very cheap beer and one of the partners
owns motorbikes, you have to share the pub with a Moto Guzzi Falcone amongst others!

On a down side - how do you ride there and back without drinking copious amounts of 'Old Peculiar' at under three
quid a pint?
Nick.

Keep the suggestions going people.
No rush.

One extra question I should have asked in my original post, is :-
Do we still want to continue with the weekend events ?

I'll sum up the many opinions at the end of the month.

I think it's worth keeping some weekend events, there are members that can't make weekdays due to work.

I hope you keep some weekend events as they are the ones I can make more easily. Although the one I did make, only had Keith and Nick as well as me.
How about coming down into north Lincolnshire? Really good roads over the wolds. I will put a couple of places forwards when I get back from Australia if there is some interest.

If North Lincolnshire is a possibility I can recommend The Sutton Arms, Scawby.

Hi Chaps,

Tempting though it is, to extend the scope geographically of our “Meet us in Yorkshire” meetings, I'd rather not.

Mike, just post the dates (and times) for a couple in North Lincs yourself, and start it from there.
Just don't pick the 3rd Tuesday (The Yorkshire Date) and see who turns up.
From memory, I don't think you can do mid week, so just pick a couple;e of Saturday dates, and venue, and see how things go.

I'm sure you might get a few from Humberside initially.

Mike, Phil and I started the Yorkshire meetings by putting notices on the forum and then turning up ourselves others then joined we don't always make each event now but in the 4-5 years we have been posting we get a regular turn out. Other areas have done the same so give it a go in Lincolnshire and see how it goes.

Hi George
I'll go the Anyone want to join me route if that's ok for this next year.
Only 28 degrees today. Warm enough but below average temp for the Sunshinecoast. Seen plenty of Harley's but only three or four BMWs.
Really can't wait to get home next weekend.
