I think my favourite ever commuter type multipurpose bike was a lowly old Honda CX500. :oops:
Kawasaki GT550, carries its weight better (and didn't need filling up 3 times a day like a CX500C ;) )

Narrow is the name of the game for inside M25 antics. A well-ridden small bike such as the old Honda CB Two-Fifty will embarrass bigger machines in London traffic and will sip fuel.

Last despatch tool I used was Suzuki SV650 (non-S), but if I had to buy* a BMW for going into that there central London, then I'd just rag a G310R to death.


*if I had to buy a new one. I would never buy a new one, so it'd be a '77 R100RS like I had on loan before - I quite liked the hands in a washing up bowl effect of the RS fairing / narrow bars

Hi guys!

I went to the BMW dealer today and sat on almost all the bikes to have a feel for the riding position:

- G310R, quite small... and I'm not longer a lingering teenager!
- F800R and F800GT have pretty much the same riding position... probably because they more or less have the same frame +/- the fairings... Anyway, good seat hight but a bit forward leaning.
- F700GS was quite nice, not too tall. Much more upright position and much more to my liking
- F800GS felt very high, upright position was something appealing though
- R1200GS, what a treat! Seating position was perfect for my size, feet reaching the ground with ease and the hands just fall right onto the handlebars. Loved it!

Come on guys, talk me out of getting a 1200GS!

from what you say it seems it is a perfect fit, just make sure you buy the option packs that enable you to sell it back to the dealer at the best price when you come to upgrade

join us in Scotland where you can ride it along the forest road, i did it on the k so you will cope

So you sat on a few bikes in the comfort of the dealer showroom.

Get out and ride them and not for a 20 minutes, go for a day's ride and then see what you like. Better still speak to the dealer and if they are worth their salt they will lend you the bike for a week end, go and do 500 miles.

Then come and report your feelings/feedback.

I won't talk you out of a GS either! But the advice to ride them for the longest period you can is good advice.

Ride it, if you love it that much then go for it. I always think that even if you own a bike for a few months and later sell it for something else, it's good to have had the experience. I appreciate the potential financial issue. I had the guzzi for a few months, did less than 1k, lost £300 and am delighted with the replacement. But I don't regret the experience.

Have fun in the quest for your bike, as the test riding and searching can be an exciting part of biking too. Most bikes I have bought since 1985 were never test ridden, just bought on looks and spec. Years ago test rides didn't seem as common, these days we're spoiled for choice!

cv said he has never paid more than 80 quid to hire a BMW he described as an "extended test ride". Maybe if you can not get a dealer to lend you a bike for the weekend, (though Monday & Tuesday would be easier) then you could offer to "hire" the bike you fancy, to get a god feel for it

Right, I'm convinced. The idea of hiring a bike seems quite a sensible one actually.

To be fair, I plan on buying second hand (a 1200GS is crazy but a 12.000 pounds plus brand new one is beyond insane...) so not sure if I have the face to go to a dealer, test ride three of four bikes just to say in the end: "cheers, I'll now take my business elsewhere thanks very much..."

So the question now is, is there a particular model-year that is especially worthy?

I understand that a major revamp took place in 2004 and, with upgrades, it carried on until 2013 when the water-cooled model came out. I also understand that a twin-cam engine was introduced in 2010.
I don't want a pre 2004 and a post 2013 is too expensive do it has to be the 2004-2012 model.

Any thoughts beyond the "newer the better"?

2010 through 2013 twincam without question. There shouldl be plenty available soon after summer .

If that is over budget, don't buy pre 2007 to avoid servo braked models.
Buy with luggage if possible as can be expensive afterwards. Damhik

Check for corrosion on front engine cover can be cleaned up, it didn't deter me. On the test ride check that the clutch is not slipping. Even on low milage models it can be a problem as caused by leaking seals between engine and gearbox. Mine suffered this and the clutch was replaced under warranty. £1000 - £1500 job. Lucky me. I think this only affected a few bikes, mine just happened to be one of them.

Agree with Tango. My rt had the seal issue but took 30k to happen!

The twin cams are great, and i think most if not all have the more reliable fuel float rather than the often failing fuel strip that was fitted. I believe floats came into production from August 2010.

See current 'Ride' Magazine, September 2017, front cover: BMW vs KTM "Clash of the Titans", pages 14 - 27.

This is an article comparing the BMW R1200GS with the KTM 1290 and includes info on used models.
The article reckons the safest buy BMW 1200GS is; "a tidy twin-cam from 2010 onwards with full BMW service history - prices start around £6500".

It's such a personal thing choosing and riding a bike, much more so (IMHO) than choosing a car. On the specific subject of age and mileage of a used bike, I once bought a 9 year old K100RS from a dealer, then ran it for another 8 years without any significant problems, although I did all the routine servicing myself. I now ride a factory lowered 1200GS and find it lighter and easier to handle in traffic than I ever did with the K100 which, at the time, I occasionally used to go into London. My inseam is 31" and I can just about manage a standard 1200GS on the move, but much prefer the added confidence which I get from being able to plant one foot (or even two feet) firmly on the ground! As others have said, try out various machines, in traffic, on the open road, and at slow speeds. As for my lowered GS - I just know that if I come to trade it in the dealers will tell me that "no one wants these now, sir, they all want the full size Adventure!"

Hi guys,

I finally made a purchase! I got a K1300GT... yes, it's very different from a GS, I know.
I just though a bit about it and asked myself how many times would I actually go off-road or even through gravel and the answer I came up with was zero so a touring bike suddenly made so much more sense.

I went to see a R1200RT and the dealer had a K1300GT next to it and the latter just got my fancy. It felt more modern and sleeker.

I'm quite happy with the bike actually!

atm we are talking about a southern event on a weekend in the spring, so that would be a good one to start with

I did go for a ride and the RT (boxer engine) sounded and felt a bit more "agricultural" with more vibrations, especially at idle.
I guess the boxer engine makes more sense on a GS rather than on a tourer...

The K1300GT is really smooth with very little vibration. It has all the controls in the same places as the other manufacturers. Perhaps the purists would say it's less "BMW" but I'm too inexperienced to comment on that really so it makes sense to me as it is.

To be fair, I would probably be "quite happy" regardless of the bike model!

As someone who has owned four different R1200RTs, I can't disagree that even the latest ones are " ..... a bit more "agricultural" with more vibrations, especially at idle ..... ". However, I have also owned several four cylinder bikes, including tourers, and the R1200RT is absolutely the best of the bunch.
Your K1300GT will be a good tourer, faster and heavier that the RT, but should be comfy and stable on the motorway. I doubt it will make a better commuter, but you can commute on anything.
Let us know how you're getting on with the GT when you've put a couple of thousand miles on it.
