Kinloch Rannoch

Postby gogs01 » Mon Mar 20, 2017 7:39 pm

Not really a travel tale, but I needed to get some miles on the new bike prior to it's first service.

I had a chance to have a ride on (mostly) dry roads and chose to head for Tummel Bridge and Kinloch Rannoch.
I haven't been up that way for decades, so it would be something "new" for me. Kinloch Rannoch would be about 40 miles from home as the crow flies, but not being a crow, not flying - and following a BMW Navigator V (when road signs would have been more direct) meant a 130 mile round trip. I did want to avoid dual carriageways, bearing in mind the bike needed to be run in, but some of the roads the satnav took me on were single track, with passing places and the inevitable gravel in all the places where you don't want it. There was only one point where it nearly caught me out but, fortunately, I didn't finish up in Loch Tummel !
Tummel Bridge passed in a blink then I was in Kinloch Rannoch and in need of a break - and I was being treated to one of Scotland's famous (and brief) "sunny showers". Then I spotted the Riverbank Cafe :

A lovely bowl of soup and a pot of tea, then head for home and an hour of cleaning therapy - it's amazing how much mud the bike picks up from (mostly) dry roads !

Hi Gordon,

That's a nice area to ride a bike!

Your weather must have been a lot better than in the South West of Scotland - it's been dreich down here and cold as well.
However, I have managed to get a 50 mile test run on the R1100RT after its winter service.

Kinloch Rannoch might be a potential Northern Meet venue?
Quite a few new members round the Dundee area now.

Glad you're enjoying the new bike - hopefully I might get to see you at one of the Northern Meets I can manage to get to.
Ced.

Maybe I can add Kinloch Rannoch to Ceres for a "anyone care to join me" post once the bike's serviced and the weather is a little warmer.

How does the bike compare with the air cooled model?

I would describe it as more of the same - more power, more gadgets.
Handling, comfort etc at least as good as my last RT. On paper it's slightly heavier but subjectively it feels a little lighter most of the time.
Not sure about the screen yet, it doesn't seem to cut wind noise as well as the screen on the previous models.

Early days yet - I'll have a better idea when I get back from Jerez in May.
