Duffers in France 2017

Postby raesewell » Thu Apr 20, 2017 5:57 pm

Six of us Duffers are off to France and Belgium on Monday for the third year running.
It's an early start for me on Monday to head for the tunnel meeting the others along the way.
Our first night is in Ypres where we will hear the very moving and emotional Last Post ceremony.
Tuesday sees us off to Étretat a small seaside town with lots of bars and restaurants.
For our third and final night we are heading to Arras, I have not been to Arras before so will report back upon our return.

I will do my best to remember to take pictures, as we lerv pictures

Thank you all, and I will let you know what the Old Tom is like, I'm sure it will be fine.

We are all back safe and sound, the Old Tom is a modern restaurant bar downstairs. The upstairs rooms are slightly tired, my bathroom was newly refurbished and modern. It is perfectly adequate. I will post some photos of the trip in due course.

This was our fist stop, Ypres (Ieper) The Old Tom Hotel
Image

The journey from the tunnel to Ypres was pretty uneventful and in bright weather.
We parked six bikes in two car parking spaces at about 4.30 with free parking after 6.00 we took a chance and didn’t get a ticket.

A shot of the group on the train +1. I have no idea who the +1 is on the far left.
He is Spanish and lives in London, what he is doing in our photo I have no clue, when I called the lads in for the photo he just rushed over to be part of the action.
Left to right +1 no idea Mike, Glen, John, Rae, Paul, Lucian.

All in all a very enjoyable trip and I think everyone is keen to go again next year.
The only bad day we had was Wednesday travelling from Etretat to Arras when it rained, hailed, sleeted and a quick flurry of snow. So contrary to common belief I changed the route on the fly to get us to our destination quicker so we could relax in the hotel bar.

A nice coffee stop in Auxi le Chateau on our way from Ypres to Etretat.

The Etretat Falaises (Cliffs) in the background. Paul had a burning desire to get to the top of the cliffs, so we just let him do his own thing.

I'll be off to France again in June, with Melanie this time. We were planning to go to Wales and whilst Wales is nice, France is better as Melanie was a wee bit jealous and she loves moules and frites.

Looks like you had a lovely time, thanks for the Old Tom report, sounds ideal for us, we're booked in for 5 nights at the end of May, looks like the centre of Ypres has changed from 10 yrs ago when we last went, you could park on the pavement right outside whatever hotel you were staying at with no risk of a ticket.

There was only one fly in the ointment when we were there, there is building work going on next door and the Kango started at 7am.
