Service Indicator Reset

Postby NigelR1200s » Wed Aug 17, 2016 7:56 pm

Unfortunately no magic sequence of button presses like the 4 wheelers get but I have found a way of doing it without a Gs911.

Bought a £10 10way socket to Obd cable, a £30 K+Dcan lead and £9 of BMW ISTA D software. It takes a bit of setting up but you can run loads of diagnostics, sync idle valves and reset your service indicator.

If there is any interest I will post some details

I bought a icom lead from chinacardiag. This is not fully wired as only 6 cores are connected, but it includes the 5 needed for the 2010 1200RT twin cam. This took about 3 weeks to come but you may get a uk supplied one

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/222217705817

And a lead k-Dcan cable from bcables in the uk this comes with a load of software but this does not cover motorcycles. Other cables are available but this one works for me and was delivered very quickly

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/162154528098

I bought Ista d from https://diagnose-software.myshopify.com ... 6325266183. This is the full BMW diagnostic package and covers bikes up to Jan 2016 and most BMW cars as well.

This is a digital download and is massive. The instructions are correct but not the easiest to follow. I used Jdownloader
and it takes a couple of hours, you need a fair amount of free space on your hard drive,

Diagnose faults, callibrate your screen! Callibrate your idle valves, callibrate your fuel strip apparantly and even reset your service indicator. All for under £60.

Once loaded the only problem I had was solved by changing the com port in device manager.

It's wired with 6 which included the 5 I needed
I know some bikes only have 4 I only mentioned it case later ones have more than 6. In which case it may not work

Whilst I have reset the service light and synced the idle actuators, I am not able to perform all the service functions. This may be down to the lead so I am investigating further.

Keep up the good work Nigel - what you have done is very interesting.

A more detailed explanation of what part does what and how it is used would be great for more simple souls like myself not experienced in digital electronics.

So under your seat somewhere there is a 10way round connector with a blanking cap. Remove cap plug in the Icom lead. This terminates in an obd socket. You plug the DCAN lead into this and into a lap top the other end. I am using a Dcan to usb but this may the reason I can't use all the functions. I am going to try one with an Ethernet connection sometime next week. The computer programme is a complex thing to load but is worth it for £9. The good news is the Ethernet leads are a lot cheaper so if it does work the whole lot should be under £40. So long as you have a lap top running Windows 7-10 with around 40g spare space.

I am happy to have reset the service light but it would be great to get everything working

Hi Guys ,

My brother has just bought a s1000xr and while trying to get up to speed on modern stuff and the diagnostics I came across this thread, it's very interesting stuff, are there any updates regarding getting the non working functions to work ?

Thanks,

Mark

Hi
a good project, saves the cost of a 911.

Not for my bikes though
no magic sequence of button presses like the 4 wheelers get but I have found a way of doing it without a Gs911
so have I -----for the R100R you can write the service mileage on the mirror with a chinagraph pencil, dont use Blue

How about writing it as an article for the eZine? I will read it (slowly #-o ) later to learn some new stuff

I have just used the "other clubs" GS911, to do some work on my R1200R, namely to reset the idle actuators (they were out) and to then synchronise the throttle cables at around 2000 RPM. It also reports that the Oil level switch is not working, another job for Dick Lovetts on Wednesday (the bike is under warranty).
Pretty easy to do, didnt take much longer than on my airheads, I have a Harmonizer Synchronisation tool. Cost was a minimal £5.00 plus postage (and club membership of course). The tool hire scheme is pretty comprehensive and is run by all round good Egg Mike D, who has been known to give good advice on here.

Glad to hear it all went o.k. with the GS-911. I wonder why the dealer didn't pick up on the oil level switch not working during the pre sale checks?

Did you perform a reset of the adaptation values?

I have had a bit of a look on the Internet, and it seems that my bike doesn't have an Oil level switch, it should be on the RT Hand side of the engine, opposite the oil pressure switch, I can see what looks like a casting on the crankcase ready to be machined for said switch, but it seems that it was fitted to RTs but not Rs.

Its also reporting a fault 10010 with one of the Lamda sensors, this is the photo of the screen.

Number 1 sensor doesn't look correct.

Have a look at the following information from the Hexcode website:

I had fitted AF-XIED ECU spoofers, two required for a 2012, but one of the black boxes wasn't working, which was what the GS-911 was showing. A replacement was sent from the US, arrived quickly (did not detour via Customs) and everything working properly. Summer seems to be a long time coming, but rode the bike for 60 miles or so yesterday and the spoofers seem to be working.

Hi Nigel,
Very interesting project, does the software cover the ESA calibration and tyre pressure sensor activation?

Have a look at the GS-911 function chart. Click on you bike model and it will show all the functions supported for that model.

Thanks Mike
Maybe I have it wrong but I was thought NigelR1200s used the BMW ISTA D software and not a GS-911, I'm trying to detemine the scope of the BMW ISTA D software.

Thanks again

I may well have been on the wine, but in my defence the post raising the question about the ESA & TPS was directly below the one where Chas had posted about using the GS-911 - I just missed the bit where he wrote 'Hi Nigel' ](*,)
