Postby ffbikersa » Fri Aug 11, 2017 4:34 pm

According to German magazine MOTORRAD issu no. 15 from July 7th, there is a worldwide recall for all R 1200 GS and GS Adventure made between November 2013 and June 2017, due to the problems with piece closing Telelever stanchions. It already caused several accidents, including this South African owner who created a separate web site "BMW Fatal Flaw":

Sounds like it took a while but BMW have conceded defeat at denying fault and have accepted responsibility.

Scary stuff, if your front end falls off at speed.

The BMW press agent Mr Gerhard Lindner in the interview on page 2 commented on so-called "service action" "Check the stanchion" - which they are performing for all R 1200 GS and GS Adventure worldwide being produced between November 2013 and June 2017. So it may not be CALLED a recall - but it IS a recall. The main text say how if the measured distance between piece that is closing the stanchions on top is 0.1 mm, the add the securing bushing, and if it is 0.2 mm or more they replace the existing stanchion with a new one, which already has the securing bushing.

British motorcyle press (Motorcycle News etc) also reported on this...

https://www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/n ... ety-recall

And US as well

http://www.advpulse.com/adv-bikes/bmw-r ... on-recall/

https://ultimatemotorcycling.com/2017/0 ... -affected/

Always felt sorry they replaced lovely good ol' 2-valve "boxer" bikes with this overtechnologised, overpriced crap - and it's just showing it's true face.

I've had the recall.
Spoke to dealer who told me the reinforcing parts aren't even in the country but they are glad to check it out if I take the bike to them. They had looked at a few (including his own machine) and not found any with play.
He understood it needs a really brutal knock to start the play, same kind of force to buckle a wheel!
He said the steering then suffers / clonks and oil may leak long before the forks collapse. Means most riders would spot the problem long before it all fell apart.
I checked mine for the .02mm gap with feelers and no sign but will call in for them to properly check - " takes 10 mins".
There's a good video link from 'Bennets insurance' site to see how to inspect the problem area yourself..
In the meantime I'll avoid climbing over boulders and tree trunks with the 'bike......
