cutting out

In the past George (R1200gs) has cut out for no reason a couple of odd times and I have never really thought any more about it, putting it down to my keys being too heavy at one point and catching, or maybe I hadn't caught the clutch as well as I though on that occasion.

While away in Morocco it cut out about 5 times.

Each time the engine was hot but not over heating. It was always after I had braked and mostly down hill but not always.

Since I have been back in England he has done three times, one of which was today and left me very embarrassed in the middle of a road during rush hour.

Now at first I thought it might be something Im doing but the really interesting thing is Pirates R1200GSA (Brunhilde) is doing it too? Brunhilde cut out as much as George while away touring and has done it two or three times over the last two weeks.

The engine cuts out, nothing left on the screen but starts up straight away once switched off and on again.

They were both serviced together is it some thing done during the service or just a coincidence?

Its something that is not effecting the computer as nothing showed up at the last service. Both bikes are serviced at least once sometimes twice a year (depending on how far we have toured) by the main dealership, and both used all year round.

There's been a number of ignition switch issues recently, granted on later bikes but a possibility?

Ive had a new ignition switch last year. That had different symptoms of it just wouldn't start but keep the ideas coming

It might be down to sub standard petrol, It happens to me occasionally when I use a particular garage.

I've not had cutting out issues with my 2006 GSA yet touch wood !

Interesting idea but over 4000 miles in the last few months we have filled up quite a few times from different stations. Even back home I use a different station to Pirate.

It's definitely puzzling

My first thought would be that you have a lot of water sitting at the bottom of the tank and under braking etc it's surging to the fuel inlet. Might be worth draining the tank and seeing what you get.

Do you and Scott regularly use Supermarket fuel? Someone advised me recently that this contains a high % of water.

Is that a take the tanks off and turn them upside down ? Won't that cause issues with anything else?

As you know, I don't work on the R12's 'cos of the amount of technology but I'd imagine you need to take the tanks off and then you should be able to drain most via the hoses. Water is heavier than petrol so sits at the bottom and is usually fairly easy to see. Shouldn't cause any problems elsewhere but bearing in mind the places you both went this year I'd suspect that it's a distinct possibility.
