Re: Front brakes still sticking

I tried releasing pressure at the bleed nipple and a difference could be felt in that the brake drag dissipated more quickly. The effect was only slight though. I also played about with wheel alignment. Even just slackening the spindle bolt a little makes the brakes drag much worse. I then went for ...

Re: Front brakes still sticking

Thank you for all the replies. The discs don't get hot in operation. With the bike off the stand, a click can be heard as the pads 'let go'. I like the idea of releasing pressure by starting at the calipers. As pressure does release over a fairly short period anyway, I'll have to be quick though! It...

Front brakes still sticking

I thought it best to start a new thread on this, as the title on my old thread no longer applies. Today I stripped the master cylinder again. No faults were found. I now have a lovely free action on the lever (and the piston) and the relief hole is squirting perfectly. The brakes continue to stick a...

Re: Leaky caliper

Here's an update and a new question. Replacing the front wheel has cured the brake disc run out. As the bearings in the old wheel were good, it must have been the disc mounting points that were at fault. As regards the leaky caliper, I found nothing except that there was plenty of residual silicone ...

Re: Leaky caliper

Thanks Ced, the O ring has been replaced with the one recommended and sold by Motorworks. The whole caliper is internally very clean, including the O ring seat. Motorworks do warn that splitting the calipers can cause them to warp causing seepage at the join, so I'll check very carefully for any sig...

Re: Leaky caliper

Hi Oldyam, thank you for your reply. The 'warp' can be clearly seen by eye, especially with the pads installed, and has occurred with two different discs. When the disc is rotated on the wheel the 'warp' doesn't move with it. For these reasons I don't think it's the disc. Bear in mind that with the ...

Leaky caliper

One of the front brake calipers on my R1100RT is seeping fluid, though only a little, despite two rebuilds: the first with new seals only, the second with pistons and seals. It is coming from the piston(s), not between the two halves. The seal grooves are very clean. The interesting thing is that on...

Re: HEL brake lines

First, let me say that none of the below is HEL's fault. They have been brilliant. The problems I've had are all of my own making. And it's also all guesswork. Sometimes I can be incredibly slow. I'm guessing that HEL don't stock 'off the shelf' lines for my bike, which is why they asked me to send ...

Re: HEL brake lines

Yes, I noticed that but thought 'I'll give them a ring anyway'. Glad I did! I posted the old brake lines yesterday and they rang me today with a query about one of the fittings - replacement lines to be posted today.

HEL brake lines

Hugely impressed by the HEL company. My R1100RT is fitted with their brake lines. Having rebuilt my calipers, I found a small brake fluid leak at one of the swaged joints on the short line leading to the left caliper. I rang HEL to try to purchase a replacement part. 'No', they said, 'Remove all you...

Re: A theory (R1100RT)

Thanks, what I have done is drill the screen fitting holes higher, which effectively lowers the screen. I can now see over it and I still have the raise/lower control. A very cost effective fix!

Re: A theory (R1100RT)

Well, that makes a change: I was right for once. The temperature gauge now reaches 5 bars and the fuel consumption appears to be normal. If anything it seems to be running slightly lean now, as it has lost some of its 'oomph' at higher speeds in top gear when pulling uphill. When I first completed t...

Re: R1100 RT Ramp or lift?

If I had the space, and I could afford it, I'd love one. I've spent an awful lot of this summer on my knees! Just one recent event makes me slightly wary. My R1100Rt went off balance the other day (shouldn't mess with bikes when I'm unwell) when I was stood alongside and there was no stopping it. De...

You're right, I really should check that. I did try a replacement, which had no effect. That doesn't mean it's working, of course.

Re: A theory (R1100RT)

I now have the sensor out. At room temp (approx 60f) it was showing around 15,000 ohms. In boiling water it was dropping only to 1,230 0hms, which according to post 12 here: https://www.bmbikes.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=18126&p=113942&hilit=oil+temp+gauge#p113942 is far too high. A theory (R1100RT)

My 1996 R1100RT is on the road and the rebuilt gearbox is working well. I have, however, had some problems. When I got the bike it was hard to start, 'chugged' and blue smoked for a while before clearing. After all the work, which included new plugs, BBS clean, etc, it started and ran well from cold...

Front brake light switch

I've been having fun with the front brake light switch on my R1100RT today. I took it off to add a bit of tape where the wiring casing was split - I think I then over tightened one of the screws. It will now work only with the rear screw just slightly loose - held in place by a dab of silicone. Anyw...

Re: R1100RT gearbox

What is very helpful is that he states that the bearings can be dropped on by cooling the shaft and h...

R1100RT gearbox

I'm getting all the parts together for a gearbox rebuild on my R1100RT. I have bought 80% of a used gearbox, as mine has a damaged swinging arm pivot pin thread (not by me!). This gearbox has much better condition intermediate shaft third gear dogs than mine, but the bearing at the clutch end is mis...
