Re: R100 rs 1978 battery charge woes

There is a relationship between the Ampere Hour (Ah) capacity, Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) and 'recovery' time but perhaps not in the way you might be thinking of. For a lead-acid battery, the time the Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) are available is generally a direct function of the Ah capacity of the batte...

Re: Fork Seal Oil Change R1100RT

Thank you very much - excellent write up. It’s 100% gone as oil was pouring down the stanchion and also squirting back onto the engine at every bump! I have a couple of more queries:- How much and what oil shall I refill with ? Suck out all the old fork oil from the slider with a hand suction pump....

Remove and fill the Float Bowl and leave it standing a while.

Re: Fork Seal Oil Change R1100RT

OK - don't rush into this! If the fork seal leak is only a weep or a slight leak, then the problem might be fixed by just cleaning the seals using a fork seal lip cleaner. If there is major leak from the fork seals e.g. Oil running down the fork slider onto the brake caliper/disk, then it is...

Re: R100 rs 1978 battery charge woes

I once had to cut open a bank of lead-acid battery cells used to power a ship's Auto-Alarm System. This electro-mechanical system was used to monitor the 500 Khz Distress Frequency for Morse Auto Alarm Distress Signals (3 four-second dashes interspaced by 1 second) which supplemented the traditional...

Re: R1100RT. Tune up.

Finally , as I was about to give up , it coughed back I into life ! Obviously didn't like the the cleaner ?? I have noticed this as well on my R1100RT! It may be the the tiny ports in the TB are getting blocked by the Carb Cleaner. If left longer before attempting starting the Cleaner has more time...

Re: R100 rs 1978 battery charge woes

Re: SoH & SoC. At what % is the battery due for change before failure? Hi Steve, I don't think an answer can be given to that question. The tester itself will clearly indicate if the battery is OK or not and if it should be charged or replaced based on the outcome of the testing algorithm. The Stat...

Re: R100 rs 1978 battery charge woes

.......Anyway, I will proceed with testing the batteries thoroughly when I return. Do you think it's OK to leave them discharged or should I give them a 24 hr charge before I leave on Saturday? Never leave any lead-acid battery in a discharged state for more than a few days or you risk losing the b...

Re: Topdon or Autool

Hi John, The Autool BT360 appears to be very similar to the TopDon ArtiBattery 101 battery tester and may even be using the same microprocessor. I have used the TopDon and paid around £30 for it about a year ago - it has performed well and I am quite happy with the purchase. There are a few similar ...

Re: R100 rs 1978 battery charge woes

Thanks for this. Sorry I haven't tested as suggested yet! The battery was so flat that I thought I would take it out to charge it today... Then testing it, I saw the SOH 1% reading and REPLACE message and thought that there was little point carrying on with it. This was the battery that came with t...

Mmmmm….. Is this the THIRD battery which has failed on the bike under the same conditions i.e. discharged after a day or two? Do NOT purchase another Battery yet!!! Why did you REMOVE the battery for testing with the TopDon? It was requested that you took the bike for a 10 mile run and then immediat...

Re: 20w50 anyone tried this ?

I recently used a "synthetic based" oil in my R1200R (2007). How does that fare as regards suitability I wonder ? I just checked that ACEA and API ratings matched the manual and off I went. I originally looked for mineral oil but they had none in stock. 'Synthetic based' is likely a blend of synthe...

Well, at the risk of sticking my neck out on an oil thread.... I can't see anything wrong with continuing to use this oil which looks fine especially for use at the lower ambient temperatures. Leave it in until the next scheduled oil change if you are mainly riding in the UK and not in heatw...

Ced, Thanks so much for those comments. I did not know about the dodge to run on the battery only - that is a great tip - did you mean the regulator lead plus the charging lead at the alternator? You can stop the charging in two ways: 1. By disconnecting the Rotor circuit either by unplugging/disco...

Hi Tincan3, I wondered how you managed to make the meet from Luing! Well done on the double overnight effort - now that is dedication! Maybe a meet can be arranged closer to you within an hours ride which means you would not have to do a couple of overnights on the mainland? Is there a hotel/...
