What the fairing made out of ???

Postby Ian T » Thu Jan 19, 2017 2:59 pm

Hi everyone

Just been researching what the fairing is made of on the K75s. I always thought ABS, then I came upon this post this morning. I have copied the relevant extract and I was just wondering what everyone thought. I want to get it right as I have to do a couple of repairs, some filling and then a paint of them all.

BMW Airhead and old K bike fairings are NOT molded plastic, they are NOT fiberglass either, although commonly spoken of as such. BMW fairings are made from resins, that have a filler ingredient that I THINK is primarily TALC. The material is often called by professional repairers as SMC, which stands for Sheet Moulding Compound. I recommend against a quick & dirty hasty job with 5 minute epoxies. It is not necessary for me to get into the type of plastic resins that BMW uses, and other technical minutiae, because it is NOT pertinent here; ONE thing IS pertinent, SMC as used by BMW will NOT repair properly (well, for the long term) with polyester resins, due to ingredients in the SMC as used by BMW>>>...you MUST USE EPOXY (and fiberglass cloth or other if needed).

Really welcome your thoughts

Cheers

I'll follow this with interest as I need to repair or have repaired the fairing on my K100RT.

BMW called it 'fibre reinforced plastic'.

Ian,
I don't know if yours is the same, but my K1100rs upper and side fairings are of the filled/reinforced resin material but the lower belly pan is a different and appears to be an ABS type material. The way to tell is that the resin material is rigid but the ABS is quite flexible.

Keith, thanks I'll have a look when I get home away for a few days now baby sitting - why kids always ask when you start a project eh?

George, thanks for looking much appreciated.

Think I will go belt and braces and use fibreglass matting and some epoxy, then should be strong enough and I am repaintng panels so might as well

Cheers

Ian,
if it is ABS, I don't think resin bonds to it very well. I believe the usual method for ABS is to dissolve some scrap ABS (from plastics seller - if you are near Hull, there is one near the Premier Inn near Castle Street Bridge) in acetone to make a 'glue', but I would check on the internet to verify that. If it is filled resin, then I have successfully repaired this using resin and matting as you suggest. Just abrade the surface well to get through to the fibres as there is a relatively weak skin of filled material which gives the smooth surface and this can pull away.

Cheers Keith

Just as I thought, it confusing. I will have to try and ascertain exactly what the top fairing is as one lug has a crack and also the belly pan as that has the great big crack in it.

Only wanna do it once so just want to get it right.

Yup near Hull I live in Hessle, moved here about 18 months ago.

Cheers

Hi
try cutting a hole through the faiting, then countersinking it on both sides, the resin & mat can become a rivit. A few holes give you more grip. A reinforcing strip will stop the belly pan flexing and the crack opening.

IIRC Pirate repaired Lolo's pannier with some black powder set with a transparent liquid, and it held. Bryce used the same sort of repair on his side panel and I have used it to repair what I think was abs on a car panel

Keith nothing through yet

Steve thanks looks interesting

George thanks I have used that stuff before it pretty good but has fractured, least it did when I used it.

The fixing of the damage I not too worried about I have used most methods in the past just need to know what top and bottom are made from so I use the right stuff

Sure I'll sort it all out

Cheers

Hi George
I don't think my fairing is a write off yet, but if I can't repair it I'll take you up on your offer.

Hi

Ain't yet just starting back, so baring different advice I am going to sand it all back both sides then use matting on the rear and an epoxy filler on the front after I groove it out a bit. Least that's what I think I will do.

Cheers
