Spline lube

Postby andys » Sat Feb 09, 2019 9:23 pm

Just wondering at what mileage the gearbox splines need lubrication on a early non paralever K100.
Thanks.

Can’t remember the mileage, but the great thing is, being a monolever it is a quick simple job.
Wheel off, purely for weight, loosen shock, four bolts, done. Of course it’s two to three years since I did it, I may be simplifying it!
If I recall, I pulled the shaft out to lube both ends, it was fun shoving it back to get the splines to line up, the UJ kept flopping!

Best roads: 623 Burgos to Santander. A back road to Metz; can't remember which!
Bumble, my 700 Transalp.
Sold my Airheads, what an idiot, but Honda is also great.
Too many bikes have come and gone, trying to be sensible now!

Hi, Andy
Mileage isn't the main factor, I think time is probably more important.
My 1990 K100LT only had 95,000km when I pulled the gearbox to lube the splines.
The splines were in pretty good condition, but the original grease was pretty dried out and I was
glad to get some fresh stuff in there. I used Starburags MBU30PTM as it was the only one of
the suggested greases that I could buy in my local engineering shop (and recommended by Chris f***ing Harris)
Anyway, good luck with it, there is nothing difficult about it, it is just a lot of simple jobs one after the other.

Many thanks.
I'm tempted to buy an old K100RS but this always puts me off.
It's not exactly something you can check prior to purchase.
