K1200RS brakes query.....

Postby milleplod » Tue Jun 26, 2018 8:56 am

......from the States! Copied and pasted to see if anyone can advise the guy.

My 89 BMW K1200RS has the ABS light flashing alternately (2 lights - wig wag).
This bike is known for the ABS modulator pump going out, which is quite expensive.
The prior (original owner) had a BMW shop in Santa Rosa replace All the brake lines, sensors, and the ABS pump a couple years ago.
A blown tail light bulb can trigger this light, as well as the rear brake light switch, or, the pump etc.
I'm not going to allow some BMW Tech in his white doctors jacket start charging me $120+ per hour to search through the electrics.
I spoke with a BMW shop owner who's retired tonight and he suggested that I do the following.
1. remove the negative cable
2. remove the positive cable
3. remove the battery
4. then connect a jumper wire from the Negative Cable to the Positive Cable and let it sit like that overnight.
He claims it will drain the stored energy from the computer brain and clear all the codes and re-set the ABS system.
Has anyone else ever heard of this before?
I don't do Electrical stuff, and don't want to damage this bike as it runs great....just with the lights flashing

Hold on a sec an 89 bike should be ABS II

Its just the centre pin to earth and hold the ABS switch in to reset it and a deflection meter can be used to read the fault

The callipers is the easiest was to tell with those bikes

Earlier Brembo Callipers fitted to the likes of the 1100 and the Earlier 1150GS will be ABS II

The later 1150GS EVO callipers where the pads are held in place by a spring plate will be Servo

Has it recently had a battery or tyre changed?

Its wither needing reset or possibly the rear speed sensor(they are very delicate) ??

Apologies didn't read that it was an 89 bike. That's what I get for glancing through it during my lunch break!

I will delete the post to prevent confusion and embarrassment!

Apologies I should have caught that one! Up at Half 5 this morning for work and not firing on all cylinders just now!

I think the RS got the Servo brakes in 2001 when they became a Fitment rather than an option

Used to do this on some of the Jaguar cars from the 90's early 2000's, albeit only for a few minutes. It did seem to reset much of the electric module memory. Never done it on a bmw or bike though.
Now: 2013 R1200RT SE; 2012 R1200GS Triple Black; Previously: K1100RS, R1200RTPx2, R1100RTPx2, R1100RT, R80RT, K100LT and Jap stuff!
