Starting 1100GS

Postby Charlie749 » Fri Jul 27, 2018 6:36 pm

Over the last few days i've been having to pull the clutch in to start the bike most of the time , sometimes it will start on button in neutral but more so not. Gear indicator works and the fuel pump primes and RID displays when side stand is up.
Any ideas

cheers

Hi John,

Sounds like the Neutral Switch is playing up.
Is the dash Neutral Light lit when it will not crank over? - if it's not lit the Starter Relay won't operate.
The Clutch Switch just bypasses the Neutral Switch so if the bike always starts using the Clutch Switch it is NOT the Starter Relay, Starter Button, Sidestand Switch or Kill Switch that is causing the problem.

The Neutral Switch piggy-backs on top of the Gear Position Indicator (GPI) which is on the back of the Gearbox behind the Swingarm.
The Swingarm needs to be removed to replace both the Neutral and Gear Position Indicator Switches.

Here is a useful fault guide for your R1100GS - simplified wiring diagrams are at the end covering Starting etc:

The Neutral Switch can be bypassed if both it and the Clutch Switch fail preventing you from starting the bike.
Alternatively, just short the faulty Clutch Switch wires together.

PS: If you put your nearest town/city in your Profile location it helps for Meets, Assistance etc.

OK - the engine should crank on the Starter Button EVERY time the Neutral Light is lit.
If the Neutral Light always lights when in Neutral it is NOT the Neutral Switch causing the problem.
If it does fail with the Neutral Light lit, then, because it ALWAYS cranks over when the Clutch Switch is operated, there could be a corroded contact in the Starter Relay pin 86b or the Starter Relay socket 86b.
To check this, unplug the Starter Relay and give the relay pins and socket a spray with Contact Cleaner before replugging the relay making sure that it is fully home in the socket.

Another possibility is that the blocking Diode inside the Starter Relay in the Neutral Switch/Starter Relay part of the circuit is intermittently faulty due to component failure or component connection failure (dry joint etc).
Not much you can do about this except pull the Starter Relay apart and check out that Diode/circuit (see the Starter Circuit diagram Starter Relay pin 86b in the Faulting Guide link) or replace the relay with a known good one for comparison.

Thanks for the location update!
