Valeo starter repair

Postby andymcg » Wed May 23, 2018 2:17 pm

Hi I have just returned for first trip abroad on my 1992 R100R.
Good trip and bike ran well and kept up with others on newer machines.
Yesterday on setting off for ferry it would not start! Got push start OK.
Fault definitely motor not flat battery.
Just got home and dismantled starter to find it has suffered the permanent magnets becoming in-glued and jamming it.
Before I buy a new one, or ? Reconditioned on does anyone know if it is possible to get a new motor part to put back with my own solenoid and pinion that all seems ok?
Or does anyone have the motor part from one that has failed elsewhere.
I don’t like waste and it seems a shame to scrap whole thing when only part is knackered!
Also I have other things to spend cash on, like a new tyre.
It's not grim up North!
since 1994 a R100R and from Oct 2015 "Walter" K75S, and from Aug 2016 R850R!

Hi Andy,

Yes, you can buy a spare body with the magnets firmly held in place for a fraction of the cost of a replacement motor. I did it some years ago. If I remember correctly, the rebuild is quite straightforward and not really much different from any other pre engaged starter. You'll probably want to check the bushes and brushes as you go.

Looking at moto bins website they do a pattern starter for£118 inc vat and the stator with magnets is £78, so not a definite.
It doesn’t look too hard to rebuild but not sure if money wise it is worth it. Rather against my phili desire to keep the good parts but unless I find a cheap stator & magnets with improved clip I think it will be a new one.

Even better... Endurolast seem to have quite a good reputation too.

Hi Andy
If you look back a few ezines I think I listed a number of cars that had our starters, they are almost the same, you just need to move over the "Nose" bits

But price of postage from USA or Germany adds lots to cost. New pattern complete starter looks the way to go.

I bought one of the Motoren Israel, planetary geared starters a couple of years back, the way it spins the engine is quite impressive, not expensive either.......they are in Holland, so shipping is reasonable and of course they speak perfect English.....and the site is easy to navigate.
