R100 with solid front disc rotors

Postby enveetee » Tue May 08, 2018 6:38 pm

Hi there

I am looking for an original R100 with brembo front calipers

One has come up on Ebay but it has solid front discs - I think it may have been in a frontal and had the front end rebuilt, but that is only a suspicion.

Did the R100's ever come with solids up front?

Not as OEM fitment.

Replacing the discs with non OEM is quite common for various reasons and is not necessarily indicative of a front end rebuild. On earlier models with ATE brakes for example it was quite common to replace the original discs with solid cast iron as they were considered to be more efficient than the drilled steel ones. The discs on the bike you are looking at appear to be solid steel so no idea why they have been fitted. Perhaps a previous owner believed that the drilled steel discs were prone to cracking or perhaps the originals needed replaced and these were a cheaper option..Who knows?
Try asking the owner why they were fitted.
If you don't make mistakes, then you aren't trying hard enough!

PFM solid discs on my 1989 R80RT. Work like a dream. Only downside is surface rust when off the road for a while.

Previous owner probably changed the original discs because they were crap in the wet. Those solid discs are probably cast iron. My '82 R100 also has solid PFM discs.

As above. If they are rusty then they are cast iron and will brake better in the wet. Discs also wear beyond set limits and have to be replaced.

This is an airhead related question, you might be more successful actually asking it in the Airhead Q&A section?
