Double stripes

Postby jtreg » Mon Mar 09, 2015 12:23 pm

Hello, I am going to add stripes (albeit incorrect for my 1983 R80RT) a la pre war bikes.

This will be a double stripe on the mudguards and tank and I am not sure about the fairing - the seat, a single white stripe....

I wanted to get and idea on what the stripe thicknesses should be and how far from the edge on the mudguards. I have some photos to look at but was wondering what the proper arrangement should be? I was going for a single stripe on the fairing in the same sort of way the stock bike had. The bike is black, so I think it will look nice... any comments, photos please

cheers

Just make sure that the stripe on the tank is at the same height as one on the tank, otherwise things can look odd.

Personally I prefer one narrow and one thicker, but not too thick

Do you mean the height of the stripe on the tank is the same height as on the fairing? Not sure I understood...

What I meant to say.........the stripes on the tank need to flow into the stripe on the seat

Quite a few models had double lines, and the /6 bikes had double lines on the mudguards, so what you are suggesting is not at all "off the wall". I'd suggest doing some picture research - you may well find that there was a standard model with just what you are looking for. I'm sure some RTs had double lines on the fairing - my '92 RS.

If you are really fussy, the correct specifications for line thickness and spacing etc are in this book:
BMW Boxer From /5 1969 to 1985, Volume 1 - All Airheads With Twin Shocks by Andy Schwietzer
I'm afraid my copy is in storage at the moment, so I can't quote them, but you can probably beg or borrow a copy from somewhere. (This is a book I'd really recommend buying, though - it's excellent.)

Hope that's some help.

Hello all. I'm probably too late to this discussion but about two years ago I was faced with the same problem. I was in the finishing stages of completing my '71 R75/5. The tank had no striping when I bought it. I contacted the BMW motorcycle museum in (I believe) Munich. The curator told me that indeed the /5 (as did many others) had two stripes that were offset by a set distance. Interestingly, the width of the pin stripe, since it was painted on by hand, depended on whether Helga or Adelheide was working that day. So there, it is now definitive.
