Northern Meet in Glen Lyon this Sunday 12th May 2019

Postby Rob Frankhamr » Mon May 06, 2019 10:32 am

Hi Guys & Gals,
The third Northern Meet of the 2019 season is on 12/5/2019 12:00 - 13:00 at the The Glenlyon Post Office Cafe, Bridge of Balgie, Near Aberfeldy, Perthshire PH15 2PP (OS Grid NN57761 46872) Sponsor is Keith (Ruralman) who cannot be present on this occasion. The 'stand in' host will be Rob (Rob Frankhamr). Open to Club Members Forum Members and Friends of either. Toilets, Food and beverages and Parking available.

Notes:
This is a rural location. There are two routes in to Glenlyon. The route from the A827 (Killin-Kenmore Road) to Bridge of Balgie over Ben Lawers is steep, winding and the surface is in poor condition. With the weather as it's been over the last couple of days, I would advise against using this route as there is currently snow on the hills and the Ben Lawers road is notorious for icing. This road is not treated. Members approaching from the direction of Killin who don't want to use this route should proceed down the A827 to Fearnan and turn left for Fortingall where they can pick up the other road along Glen Lyon.

The Glenlyon Road is a a good road but narrow and winding in places. You may wish to take this into account when planning timings.

Do not even think of using the marked road from Killin via Pubil.

Nearest fuel:
The nearest fuel stations are in Aberfeldy (20 miles) and Lix Toll Garage at the junction between the A827 and the A85 (16 miles). There is no fuel in Killin.

Hope to see you all

Regards
Rob

Another great day out... the weather smiled on us. I arrived at 20 to 12 and found Pete (Tincan3) already in residence. Pete (Jockboxer) arrived a little late. It was a good thing we arrived early as the place was very busy with groups of cyclists, motorcyclists and a group of Lotus/Caterham 7s turning up. In spite of the number of customers, the staff coped just fine.

Seated outside in the sun, good conversation among ourselves and with other bikers, what more can one ask.

On the way home, I took a detour via the Lawers Rod to Kenmore and Aberfeldy, then via Pitlochry and the unclassified Dalnacardoch road giving a round total of 98 miles in all. Not a particularly long ride but some great roads of all types.

My thanks to Keith for arranging the meet and for the two Petes for making it a memorable day out...

I came via a couple of nights at Kinlochleven to take in the SSDT. I was a wee bit late as the tent had to be dried out. Nice to meet up and chat: anything from Tiger Cubs and good / bad riders and drivers to Brochs, Irish iron age forts and the slave raiding habits of those Roman chaps. Home via Kenmore, Amulree, the Sma' Glen, Gleneagles and the new Forth crossing. A grand day out indeed.

A couple of pics from the pipeline.

Hi Jockboxer,
You were quick with the upload. Thanks for the photos. Here is the link to the Pictish signalling article -

I'm happy to discuss it. There is a lot of information I had to leave out but the principles are there.

Rob, nice to meet you and thanks for the chat. I'll tell you the TNT tale in June at Rannoch.
The road along the south side of Loch Tay was nice and I made the 16:30 ferry comfortably.
A nice day out and excellent soup!
Cheers!

Sounds like I missed a good meet.
I arrived in Rimini yesterday in glorious sunshine but, by lunchtime today, it was very wet and very windy, so I would have been better off in Glen Lyon !
Heading south tomorrow and hoping for better weather - hoping to meet up at future events. 😊
