Looking at the 'suggested' videos, I see 'Airbag Jeans', 'Airbag Jackets', 'Airbag Helmets'... next it'll be 'Airbag Gloves' and 'Airbag Boots'... and all with vastly inflated (Hah) claims about how they would save your life. I for one would start to get worried about the amount of High Exposives I was carrying around...

Talking of explosive devices in cars. Strictly speaking you are supposed to stop and declare your airbag before going through the Mersey tunnel and most other tunnels in the UK.

How does one remove them if they are in their exploded state?

Presumably one needs assistance and that in itself could prove in the very least embarrassing but more likely an impeding court case.

I have a Helite airbag summer jacket. Uses a CO2 cannister to inflate and if inflated it slowly deflates. There is a lanyard that attaches to the bike which attaches to the firing mechanism which requires 30 plus kilograms on it to operate, whatever that is in Newtons. Never gone off yet when getting off the bike.

I usually wear zip up body armour. My choice. Good job I was when I was rammed from behind by a 19 year old on her mobile whilst pointing her wheels.

Of course, that was pretty much the case with most cars up until the introduction of collapsing steering columns, steering wheel crash pads, seat belts and driver air bags. Can't say that it meant drivers paid any more attention though...

Just the point that when (some)people feel better protected they are more inclined to take risks.
If you know what you are doing is potentially dangerous you take great care.
Modern motor cars with all their comfort and driver aids can encourage inattention from their drivers.
Driverless/autonomous vehicles are the ultimate example. Who would trust them?

For the first ten minutes maybe... the human brain has an unparalleled ability to ignore non immediate danger in the presence of immediate concerns like comfort, convenience and fashion. For the average - no the majority of drivers driving down the road, the last thing they think about is what will happen to them, if they crash. It ain't gonna happen... till it does, by then it's too late.

There is some suggestion that this is a species survival trait... If you worry all the time about what might happen, you'd spend all your time sitting at the back of the cave shivering (and worrying about rockfalls).

As to autonomous vehicles, if someone were able to convince me that they were 100% reliable, I'd trust them... wouldn't like it but that's a different thing. Problem is I've never seen anything designed by man that is 100% reliable. What percentage reliability does an autonomous vehicle have to have before it is better than the human brain???

I wonder if that’s the same as me riding faster when wearing my protective gear. Of course I could be just feeling safer.

Re Mjolinor’s cocoon feeling comment, I think I’ve said before, but a year or so back I drove my brothers new car. I really felt detached from the outside world. The ‘pretty’ dash lighting, the quietness, the comfy seat, the sound proofing..... I imagine if I hit a motorcycle whilst driving that car, I’d say ‘well that’s inconvenient for me, rather than thinking what have I done!
