A new friend for Betty Ethel

Postby Jon K » Thu Jun 10, 2021 1:56 pm

I’m very excited because this weekend I’m going to drive from Essex to North Yorkshire to pick up a Greeves Scottish. I can’t wait!

The bike is being gifted to me by my wife’s uncle. He’s had it in his garage since he bought it and got it fully restored about 14 years ago. I’m told it’s a ‘65, though some chaps from the Greeves Riders Association forum (yes, I’ve joined that already) to whom I showed the one picture I have, reckoned it might be a bit earlier.

Having a Greeves will be especially poignant to me because they were made in my childhood hometown of Thundersley. And I was born in ‘66 so we’re of a similar vintage. Hopefully it’s less clapped out than me though.

Anyone who knows me on here will be aware of the fact I’m somewhat mechanically challenged, and two-stroke is going to be a whole new world for me. And there’s sod all about them on YouTube, and no workshop manual I can find other than for the Villiers engine.

Wish me luck. I reckon I’ll need it.

You'll have no problem with engine parts. Villiers engine used by many marques.
You're a very lucky boy...

Actually, I'll give you a pound for it, you've doubled your money.

Nit pickers..... I know you can't double zero

I don't mind the zero's being doubled between the first digit (not being zero) and the decimalpoint when getting paid

Hmm, where is the blue cloud that should accompany such escapades?

That's a nice looking Greeves , are you going to do any club trials riding on it. Or a bit of green lane riding.
I tried to be normal once, worst two minutes of my life.

Some blue smoke but not bad at all. Nice smell!

I’ve joined the Greeves Riders Association, and I’d like to think I might try some green laning at least, but in truth it’s unlikely. I’m not a skilled rider on the road, and the nearest I’ve been to off-road is my lounge. The trailer isn’t mine, I borrowed it, and my 55yr old knees won’t thank me for it.

But who knows, maybe…

No later than that. Not mine I hasten to add. It belongs to the people who gave me the Greeves. It’s one of the Rover ones, long after Morris and Austin were history. Very nice though, immaculate inside and out, fully restored. Purrs like a kitten too.
