RT Lower fairing bracket insert repair.

Postby CaptAirhead » Tue May 29, 2018 10:37 am

One of the bolts on the lower fairing bracket had seized with the result that the brass insert pulled out of the housing. Even in the vice the nut would not budge so will have to be cut off. That just leaves an empty hole in the fairing where an insert should be:-

A wee scout around eBay and I found some press-in inserts of the correct size so I tooled up for a repair:-

I worked on the hole a wee bit with a round file to get the diameter correct. Didn't want the hole too small and split the housing or too loose so it would just pull out. I got a good press fit and with a drop of Araldite got the insert nicely bedded in.

All I have to do now is cut the old nut off the bracket and we are good to go. Just have to remember to use a bit of copper grease and not over tighten the nut.
Another wee job done.
Ian.

P.S. I might do the same thing in the instrument housing where some of the insert housings have cracked off with age.

B*gga!!

When I did it, I actually made inserts by filing down nuts. Never thought to look for inserts on ebay!
