to washer or not?

Hi all,

The question revolves around my 1952 Condor( side valve twin). The barrel, sleeved alloy, has six m10 retaining nuts. There are no washers
under the nuts on either side. I do have a schematic which does not show a washer under the nut. There is a little bit of 'graunching '
under a couple of the nuts which I am keen not to exacerbate.
So.......the question to the engineers/more technically minded among you is, do I put washers in ( don't think I have ever assembled anything
without one) or do I go with the schematic, leave without, and use a blob of locking compound ??

I almost always use washers, especially steel nuts next to alloy lump, better grip and no 'graunching '

No graunching plus a slight spreading of the load too.
Best roads: 623 Burgos to Santander. A back road to Metz; can't remember which!

Always use washers.

Definitely use a washer wherever the surface is soft or uneven. And use a dab of oil, or Copperslip, depending on the location.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the replies. Everyone I spoke to on this made the same comments as voiced here.
No one could come up with a good reason for not using a washer under these circumstances.
Washers it is then, albeit thin ones as there is no 'extra' stud length to accommodate them.
