Gullibility....

Postby milleplod » Thu Jan 10, 2019 1:17 pm

It's been reported that a professor from Oregon is being sacked because he's made one or two people look a bit stupid. He's been knocking out spoof academic papers that have been published in academic journals, which took them seriously.

One was called 'Our Struggle is My Struggle : Solidarity Feminism as an Intersectional Reply to Neoliberal and Choice Feminism'. It consisted of nothing but Chapter 12 of 'Mein Kampf', with the odd word changed!

Another was titled 'Human Reactions to Rape Culture and Queer Performativity at Urban Dog Parks in Portland'.

The mind boggles.

I think what he did was very clever and, to some extent, amusing.
However, the world seems to be awash with "fake news", which is disinformation by another name and I don't think this is a good thing. So, even if I might have had a bit of a chuckle at academics being made to look silly, I don't have too much sympathy for him.

I think fake new is meant to be taken seriously. If anyone took, for example, a chapter of 'Mein Kampf' as being a serious paper on some obscure take on feminism, something worthy of, perhaps, disseminating amongst students, then I'd contend the professor's done a good job! :-k

Pete - you may have to revise the title of this thread as I understand the Oxford English Dictionary plan to remove the word "gullible" from the dictionary before the next reprint.
