Banned from The Other club forum... or am I?

Postby Rob Frankhamr » Wed Oct 03, 2018 7:22 pm

This evening I went to book into the BMW Owners Club forum (which I do occasionally). When I get to the forum page what I see is a message as follows:

Critical Information

You have been banned from this forum.
Please contact the webmaster or board administrator for more information.

What! what have I done? I haven't posted anything there for some time... Then the little grey cells boot up... I haven't even got to the log in page yet let alone tried to log in... How can they ban me if they don't know who I am.

Tried the laptop, same story

Tried the Pad, same story

Tried the mobile... you got it... same story

All different device IPs

Either the forum software is taking exception to my router IP or the forum itself is up the creek.

Anyone else having any difficulties with this???

Hi Rob,

I don't think there would be any reason for you to be banned. If Bill Smithson logs on here he may be able to check it out. Otherwise I could contact him for you.

I have not logged on to the BMW Club forum since my return.

Apologies Rob, but I can assure you that you have not been banned from the BMW Club forum.
Please bear with me for a short while till I check things out later this morning.

It looks as if you have problems with your router.
Hope that helps. Now I'm off to bed again to recuperate.
Cheers.

Hi Bill,

Sorry to hear about your health issues...

It's nice to know that I'm in the clear with the BMWOC forum.

Just checked again and I am still getting the same message. The message appears to be a response from the forum software so it's unlikely to be a direct issue with my router. It may be an issue with the IP assigned to the router or just possibly with my ISP.

My main worry was that someone had hacked the forum but, if that's not the case, the matter isn't urgent.

Off out now but I'll try rebooting the router later to see if the re-assignment of the IP makes any difference.

Please don't worry about it and enjoy your rest. I can manage without the forum for a while. I'll let you know if there is any change.

Just a quick post to say that, I've managed to regain access to the BMWOC forum...

For the future information of anyone who might suffer a similar issue, I will detail exactly what happened and what solved it.

I was getting a forum generated message saying that I was banned from the forum as soon as my computer logged in to the forum page (before I was even able to attempt to log in to the forum itself). This happened whether I came into the page from a link or from a typed URL and happened on four different devices including PC's, Android phone and Android Pad (I don't 'do' Apple). They were all connected through the same WiFi system and I never had a chance to check on a 'foreign' WiFi router.

The problem disappeared when I hard rebooted my WiFi router (pulled out the power plug left it for a minute then reconnected it). This would have forced the ISP to assign a new IP address to the router.

My assumption is that the forum security system for some reason took exception to my router IP and blocked anything coming in from that source.

As far as I could tell, no one connected to the router has experienced any other problems and I have been able to access other similar forums (fora?) without any issues. I have no idea why the issue occurred.

I've gone into some detail with that in case anyone experiences a similar issue in future.... The good news is that the problem is solved.

I've PM'd Bill on the other forum to let him know... I really hope he is recovering and all my best wishes go with him.

forums (fora?)
[rant] So do you put "forums" first to satisfy other people even though it sounds incorrect or the other way round?

To me it sounds wrong but people will not take any note of it. Forums is now accepted because of the Yankers corrupting the language but to me it will never be valid.

"Stadium" is another one, if you watch old Grandstand programmes you will never hear the word "stadiums", they always used it correctly as "stadia" but between the 70s and now the language has gone completely to pot. [/rant]

I don't think you can give the 'Yankees' credit for everything (all though I do draw the line at aluminum! and the totally unjust persecution of the poor innocent 'u' in color)... we are quite capable of corrupting our own language and have been actively doing it for centuries... before Columbus even 'invented' America (Yes I know he neither invented it or named it (or even discovered it)... a figure of speech).

Aluminum is correct, aluminium is incorrect actually. :)

At least according to the naming of elements ruling.

Yankers are certainly not to blame for the incorrect grammar that is creeping in, you will never hear a Yanker saying "I was sat", they will always say "I was sitting" which is correct but what they are responsible for is the extremely annoying modification where they use "ay" instead of "a". Ay is the name of the first letter of the alphabet, "a" or "an" are the indefinite article.

I think we probably should not be going here, it will fill the forum and overload the computers. :)

I don't read it that way... in fact if one goes by precedent, the correct spelling is 'alumium'. The naming of elements ruling of '97, actually states that names should end in 'ium' but that postdates the discovery of aluminium by a couple of centuries so we really can't rely on that. To my mind, it was discovered by a Brit and he settled on the name 'aluminium' (after a couple of false starts) so the 'mericans are just plain wrong.

Pedantry creates precedent, OK.

I concur. :)

You are right, I was wrong.

Aluminium 1825
Selenium 1826
Thorium 1829
Titanium 1830

So naming convention at that time is as we have it. The Yankers are wrong. That always cheers me up. :)

The problem disappeared when I hard rebooted my WiFi router (pulled out the power plug left it for a minute then reconnected it). This would have forced the ISP to assign a new IP address to the router.

Rebooting a modem/router MIGHT change your public IP address. It depends on whether your ISP allots you a dynamic or static IP.

https://whatismyipaddress.com/dynamic-static

I have a static one, so rebooting would have no effect. Forum software may use different IP block-lists to control spamming. Also my router only does the routing, as it sits behind the ISP companies supplied router/modem/VoIP box which had the router disabled (it is in bridged mode)

It's possible that an IP address (individual, or range of IP addresses) may have been for whatever reason blacklisted. Some idea of what that is all about can be had here: https://whatismyipaddress.com/blacklist-check
