Helmet renewal - when?

Postby mw3230 » Mon Aug 18, 2014 8:40 am

I was of the opinion that it was advisable to replace a helmet after about 5 years - or sooner if involved in an accident. However at a recent talk given to our IAM branch by the proprietor of a helmet specialist supplier the audience was told that this was unnecessary, and that modern good quality helmets do not deteriorate with age in the way that older ones did. In fact the speaker said that if looked after a good quality helmet could be expected to give 20 years of service.

Anyone any views? I was looking forward to a new helmet in a couple of years!

This is different information than I got from Schuberth about a year ago who told me that they advise 5 to 7 years

Wow I always thought it was 2 / 3 years. Mine don't last that long anyway if your wearing them day in and day out the insides drop to bits.

I usually change mine, like Lolo, every 2/3 years. If the liner is still together after that time it must be getting a bit scanky #-o . 20 years no way!

Thought 5 years was the time the shell started to degrade too much.
Besides the degrading outer shell, I had a Nolan where bits were flying off after just three years and 20000km.
I take out the inner lining of my Schuberth and wash it when I have been sweating a lot.

If you never wore the helmet and kept in a dark place in "normal temperatures" it would last a very, very long time I imagine.

The biggest cause of deterioration in modern helmets is the enzymes in your sweat. These eat away at the lining and other materials over time.
I always wear a helmet liner, and wash them after a weeks use or daily if in hot climes.
Be aware your helmet will get looser and looser without you noticing until you try another one on. I reinforced this just recently when I bought a new C3 Pro, I occured to me that my immaculate 7 year old Multitec was way to loose to be safe any more. It will be retired once I've removed my autocom gear and installed it in the laser carbon lid I also have.
Oh and I always store the helmets in the helmet bags (when I'm not using them!) to keep UV rays at bay.
I've only got the one head so I'd better look after it.

I've learned that the best way to store your helmet after use is with the lid open so that it can breathe.
I heard that some riders had complained about moulding in their helmet but they were storing them closed directly after use.

Surely it will depend on what the helmet is made of and how much it is used. I wouldn't trust a helmet after an impact if I was riding a solo. I still have a carbon fibre composite AGV I bought in 1989. I can't wear it now as the inner padding/shell has deteriorated so its just a memento of my Sondel Sport Marlboro RD440. If the inner was okay or could be replaced and the fit okay I would still wear it

When acting for motorcyclists following an rta we always claim for a new helmet. Never had an argument on that one.

HI
I made a claim on my household when I had a self induced accident, I borrowed a bike which turned out to have 2 problems, Steering head bearings and the Nut holding the handle bars (Me)

My insurance company paid out for everything I was wearing (I did not claim for my underpants), including my watch but not my helmet which they classified as "Sports Equipment" using in a sporting capacity.
