Forum Downtime tomorrow - 13/11/14

Postby boxerman » Wed Nov 12, 2014 4:19 pm

Sometime tomorrow the forum will be down for maintenance. This is for a fairly major update so it will be down for some time - hopefully only a few hours but no guarantee on that..

This is a major update that introduces a lot of new coding and, in the long term, facilities. The downside is that none of the current add-ons, colour schemes or designs will work so, at this stage, there is no choice but to run with the standard, default forum and colours. New add-ons will become available in due course so over the coming months you may well see changes in appearance and facilities but for now it will be a bog standard forum......

 Hopefully won't be too long - I'm preparing as much as I can now to limit downtime - the danger always arises if something goes wrong..... #-o It's not as major as the time we were down for 3 days.....

Oh no Ced you will be forced to watch Jeremy Kyle (the bumptious tit with an ego complex I am told) or alternatively you could poke your own eyes out with red hot needles, the latter would probably be prefferable to the former.
I hope you are better soon.

Thanks Rae - Jeremy Kyle is too horrific to contemplate!

If the forum is down for three days and the rain goes off I might count the pebbles in my driveway!

Yeah, that'll upset Lolo..... 'fraid there'll be no snow, Christmas or New Years headings either.. :smt089

Problem is that there's just too much new coding used in this system so none of the old stuff will work and it'll be some time till the experts produce new working add-ons for the new software - I think producing them with the new system is also considerably more difficult so it may be that some will never re-appear. The upside is that adding and removing the new style add-ons is a doddle and doesn't require me manually adding lines and lines of code along with it's risk of making a mistake and screwing everything so long term we should get much more functionality.

There are currently only 4 mods available and two of those will be very useful so will be added fairly quickly once we're up and running.

9 years and 3 months we've been running and in that time I think we've built up one of the best forums around - good natured, lighthearted at times and very, very helpful and knowledgeable. Yes, it costs me some time here and there with maintenance but it saves me far more than it costs - the original idea of this place was to try and put together those with the knowledge and those with the questions in order to remove some of my workload with pleas for help from the BM Bikes site (I seemed to spend half my life responding to queries) - it's dramatically decreased that workload.....

I love this place and it's community..

Although new to this forum I have to say it is certainly one of the best forums I've had the privilege of being a member of!
I think that as well as the physical/virtual forum itself, it's the members that make a forum, and the ones here that I've come across are both knowledgeable and extremely friendly - it's a nice place to be!

Thank you to everyone - without this place I'd be well and truly stuffed!

Oh, and Ced - get well soon!

Well, I still have stuff to do but we're back up and running.

You'll notice a few changes to basic layouts - main things to remember are that the 'Quick Links' button at the top left will give you access to options such as 'View New Posts' and your username at the top right will give you access to your profile and preference settings.

I now have the ability to create new pages within the forum so you will soon see extra links appearing at the top for such things as Club events.
