Been meaning to post this for the last few days:
Hi Phil
Progress is very slow as he is in the wrong place and needs major rehabilitation. He still has a language problem though not a speech one. He has been moved to a different room away from the desk but in the same ward. He does not need constant attention now and that room was needed for someone else. I brought him in the latest BMW magazine and he appered to read it. He kept turning the pages. When Gisele went in she started to read an article out to him about someone getting lost in the Alps and he was amused and tried to explain to her why there is always someone at the end of a group. She was also pointing out pictures to him. I left the magazine in the locker so that visitors can read it to him though sometimes I find all he wants is the company of another person in the room and there is no need to talk to him.
Frances
I reckon he could really do with some visitors if any of you get over there..

Pat should, by now, have been moved to the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dun Laoghaire. This should make life easier for anyone visiting as it should be walking distance from the docks.....

A quick search of the net comes up with the following site that lists the address and directions to find the place etc.

I got some word from Fran this morning

I woke up and it was a brisk morning bright but chilly and I remembered the last time our friend was here as he rode off with a wicked gleam in his eye he was going to blind some buggers with his new lights and put his screen up and down willy nilly just as he felt like!

So I mailed Frances and she mailed me back later

I'm glad I decided to follow my thoughts thru and actually ask this morning
Depending on his progress he may be in the house for Christmas.

He is only there for 3 weeks now but he has come along in leaps and bounds. We cannot believe it.
He can dress(with a bit of help) and feed himself.

He can also push himself in a wheelchair for a short distance. They have him using pedals to strenghten his hips and legs.

With the help of a nurse he can get from the bed to the wheelchair and back again. This involves using his legs to stand up. They have to hold on to him as his legs are not strong enough yet.

Our son graduated from college on Friday and we thought that Pat could attend the ceremony but he cannot stay long in the chair at the moment.
We visited him afterwards to take a few photos and you could see that he was as pleased as punch.
We brought him down to the cafe for a celebratory cup of tea.
We stayed for a while and then he got uneasy and had to go back to the ward as he wanted to rest in the bed.
When he was comfortable in the bed the slagging started.

Himself and Alison were slagging me. Even though we did not know exactly what he was saying his body language spoke volumes.
I have no problems with cards. You could sent them to the house.
In case anyone is mystified about "Cards" I asked Frances if she'd mind folks sending christmas cards and letters or cards to Pat to "Stimulate" his thought processes, any photos you may have of Pat and his bike on trips with you guys would probably also be appreciated

His big problem at the moment is tiredness and tying his words in the right order and sense in sentances.

So If you would like to send a card please send me a PM and I'll send one back to you with the address

I saw a photo of Pat with his son this afternoon and he looks well The eyes are bright and full of mischief (as ever!) So I can only join in the chorus of good wishes and vibes being sent His and Frances way!

It is great to read that Pat is still making sure and steady progress.
It would be good to hear that he can be at home in time for Christmas.

Well, I recieved a photo of Pat in his chair with his son on the graduation day and I couldn't believe just how well Pat looks..... He really is beginning to look like the Pat we all know and love and I'm beginning to wonder if we may find him back on here before too many more months have passed - he looks pale but but the scowl on his face says that he knows some bugger's taking a photo...

I asked Fran If I may cut Pat from a shot and let you see how well he's getting on and I received this mail this evening
I think you should leave the photo as it is. I see this as a milestone in his rehab as it is a record of his achievement that he was able to attend an event outside of the hospital. We took him in a wheelchair taxi from the hospital in Dun Laoghaire to the botanic Gardens in Glasnevin-from the Southside of the city to the Northside. He was able to sit and participate in the ceremony and knew what was going on as you should have seen the wide smile on his face when Kilian was presented with his cert. He then had a cup of tea afterwards. All in all we were gone from the hospital for nearly 4 hours.
On Friday he walked three quarters way down the ward with the aid of a walking frame and two people supporting him on either side in case he fell
Go Wan Ya Boy YE!!!!

I think one also must remember how happy Pat's family were to see him there. And I'm sure his son was/is really pleased Pat was there to see him on the big day. Good work all round.

It is brilliant to see that Pat is still making progress, it reminds me that I should sort out a photograph or two for him.

All brilliant... and he's wearing his Dragon Rally hat which he acquired last year when we had a great weekend at the Tyn-y-Coed. I can't believe that was nearly a year ago. We must all pray very hard for 2009 to be Pat's year. He look's like he could do with a couple of steaks and a few drams of Jemmies. Without Pat around it is hard to find anyone who will debate whether "800 years of oppression" was mainly self inflicted and other such drivel until the bottom of the last bottle is reached !! He is really missed by all.

Latest update from Fran - he'll get home for a few hours on Xmas day...
Hi
Yesterday Pat walked into the house for the first time since the accident because we could not get the wheelchair into the house as the doors are too narrow. He needed a lot of help. We had to be there to support him as he cannot walk unaided. He was able to get into and out of the car and had to use a walking frame to get to the front door. As he gets very tired he was in the wheelchair going around the house. Looks like he can come home for a few hours on Christmas day.
The night before he was at the patient's christmas party. He still has a sweet tooth as he was looking for second helpings of trifle. He enjoyed the whole night and was even moving to the music in the wheelchair. He has not lost the upper body dance movements.

Ladies and Gents I would just like to let you know that Pat made it home for a few hours on
Christmas day and whilst his recognition wasn't "great" The stimulus of being home and with
his family brought out the mischevious elf in him.
I feel really good to be able to tell you this not for me but for our friend who we weren't even sure was
going to survive the accident, Easter last year
Whilst he did have to be helped in because his leg muscles are still weak He walked in through his own Doorway!
His one year old granddaughter sat on his knee for a while and he was extremely proud
I have seen a couple of photos and whilst he has a way to go yet I believe he'll get there in the end
With the Love of Frances, His Children and his friends around this small world of ours I think he'll get there
I'll keep sending my positive vbes and if any of you have photos of pat up to mischief anywhere please pm me
and I'll return an e mail address, He needs stimuli to help to reboot the brain cells.

Merry Christmas and here's to a Happy New Year, One and All!

Still seeing some slow improvement I believe.

Latest update from Frances recieved today:
Hi
Pat is now getting around with the help of a walking stick. We are taking him home for a night at the weekends at the moment to see how he is getting on. When he is here he has been looking for a cigarette particularly when he is sitting in his usual chair. He does not look for them in the hospital. On a few occasions we brought him to a pub and had to pass by the smoking area but that did not seem to bother him. Looks like it is the habit rather than the nicotine that is the problem. He is not impressed that we do not give him a cigarette and gets into bad form but the nurse said that it would be unsafe to do so as he is not safety aware.

Well, Pat's home for the weekend and I've just had a quick chat with him on the phone - he sounded quite bright and breezy and although at times I struggled to understand what he was saying, it seems he's been reading the last e-zine that I sent him and was criticising it..... Sounds like the old Pat surfacing there......

Was good to talk to the ol' fella though - I'm hopeful that both Pat & Frances will make Killala and we'll all be able to take him to the bar and give him a tipple in some different company.
