North Coast 500

Postby Dode4444 » Tue Sep 17, 2019 6:30 pm

Myself and a mate are heading off to do the NC500 this Thursday and are doing it in 2 days. (We’ve both done the east coast countless times so are blitzing that in a day).
We are stopping off up in the north west at Scourie for the night and doing the west coast and out to Applecross on the Friday.

Just wondering if anyone had done the route and have any recommendations of places to visit/see in particular on our way?

Thanks.

George.

Don't forget the pie shop in Lochinver (https://www.piesbypost.co.uk/). Lots of choice of fillings - yummy!
There are also the gardens at Inverewe that are almost sub-tropical.

I rode around the North and West coast of Scotland before I'd ever heard of a "NC500", but I don't think I encountered this wee mad road.
Must keep it in mind for next year .....

North Coast 500

Postby Dode4444 » Sat Sep 21, 2019 12:07 am

Well turns out 2 days wasn’t nearly enough for us and we ended up only doing about half the journey and other places so it was more a tour of the highlands than the NC500 route. We couldn’t get out of bed early enough due to laziness/hangovers.
We fell into the ‘wee mad’ road by chance whilstwas just trying to do a shortcut. Was an amazing road with some stunning views. We also found a stunning piece of road between Lairg and scourie. Basically cutting across from east to west.
So definitely try and do it when nice weather comes again and give ourselves at least 3 full riding days.ImageImageImageImage

Book in at the YHA hostel at Achmelvich Bay or camp at the site at Clachtoll. Hmmmm ... there's a thought. The hostel can be booked by groups. Anyone fancy a meet up and a few drams? :drunken:

There are twenty beds in the hostel. £400 per night off season. I think we'd be very lucky to get twenty, so I suggest pre booking one of the dorms and maybe a private room or two.. My suggestion would be some time in early May ish? Pre midges hopefully?

Hi
i have booked a place in Wales for club members from 15th To 22nd May, so it would be good if we avoid that week, then more of us can come.

All members are welcome to join us at Radnor at around 70 quid for the week

So, some time in the second week of May 2020.
I wouldn't want to do a week, but two or three nights would be OK for me.

I'll make a note for a reminder nearer the time.

Well after attempting it last week. I would say 2 nights and 3 full days riding would be enough to do the route and plenty time for stopping for pics etc. The east coast is quicker than the west also.

My suggestion would be a couple of nights at Achmelvich. They have two 5 room dorms, a twin room (double bed) and an 8 room dorm. Realistically, I think the two smaller dorms would be achievable via normal booking. If the whole hostel was to be hired, this would cost £425 per night in the low season. Per night costs for normal booking would be around £22.

Two nights would allow a bit of bimbling about on local roads. Those who wanted to do the whole NC 500 could use the third day, or indeed any day, as day 1 of the circuit.

Had forgotten about this. I will post again in early spring 2020 and organise a wee jaunt to Achmelvich. Them as wants to take part can register interest then. I may need to be reminded!
