Sewells on tour 2016

Postby raesewell » Thu Sep 01, 2016 1:11 pm

Myself and my good lady wife (Melanie) are off on our jollies on Friday. Melanie finishes work at midday and we'll be off shortly afterwards.
We are heading for the Premier Inn just north of the Dartford Crossing so as to give us a short ride to the tunnel on Saturday Morning.
Once in La Belle France we are heading for Etretat for one night. Melanie is looking forward to moules and frites (her favourite).
Sunday morning we are heading for Granville for two nights. Tuesday will see us off to Quimper also for two nights. We have been told that Quimper is very nice and I'm sure it will be. From Quimper we will be heading down to St. Nazaire just for one night to get us nearer to one of our most favourite of places namely La Rochelle. If you have never been to La Rochelle you should go at least once. After La Rochelle we make our way back up country to Chateau Gontier then onto Honfleur. Honfleur is another must visit place. After Honfleur we are getting the ferry from Dieppe to Newhaven to return to Blighty.
I will do my best to try and remember to take pictures along the way. I will, honest Guv 8-[

Be aware Rae that there's planned major disruption i.e. blockage of the Motorway into Calais Ports from the 5th onwards. They're talking of totally blocking it until the camps are removed.

You could always detour to Santander and get the ferry back!

We are going across on the 3rd and coming back on the Dieppe ferry so the disruption shouldn't affect us.

When we got to the tunnel on Saturday morning with time to spare there had been a breakdown in the tunnel and they were forecasting a two hour delay and there were bikes everywhere
Image
The delay only turned out to be an hour and a half, which gave us time to relax and have a coffee.
This is the hotel in Etretat and what a great little town. I'll be back there.

The beach and cliffs in Etretat

The journey to Granville was a damp one although we never actually saw any rain, there must have been a cloud traveling just in front of us.
We stayed at the Ibis here
Image

Granville is a working fishing and ferry port, so not very touristy. We managed to find the local equivalent to Wetherspoons. ;D

The journey to Quimper (pronounced Kemper) was in bright sunshine on beautifully empty French roads. A hard task but someone has to do it ;)

We are at La Palice and the U Boat bunkers are all locked up, the bus ride was nice though and the day ticket only cost €2.40 for two of us, a bargain I think.

The bike nestled up next to a scooter in La Rochelle, I expected to come back this morning to find lots of little mopeds to feed.

Next door at Les Enfants Du Rock they have a live rock band playing and we are in the Gaz'Bar so I suppose you could say it was Rock the Gaz'Bar and they don't Clash.

Our journey continued today, we left La Rochelle in hazy sunshine, it had been raining in the night and the rain had washed off some of the bugs from my screen. Heading north from La Rochelle the weather turned a bit cooler and overcast (perfect conditions in my opinion). The roads were mainly empty again being a Sunday morning in France. We did encounter a fairly lengthy queue of traffic just outside of Cholet, I managed to filter past in the mile or so of traffic and we were once again moving freely. We pulled in for a coffee stop in Cholet, good old McDonalds again. As we approached our destination for today, Chateau Gontier the sun came out and the bleedin' temperature started to rise again. We have had little stroll around the mainly closed town and I'm sure if it were open it would be very nice. We found a La Mie Caline (the French equivalent to Greggs) open to get a snack to tide us over until the restaurants and bars open again at 7 O'clock. I'm sure a few drinks will ensue and tomorrow we are heading for Honfleur.

The bike tucked up for the night.
Image

The hotel has a pool which alas we won't have time to use.

Irene and I found that most attractions were closed when touring France in September.

It seems the French public enjoy their 4 weeks summer holiday in August and then the hoteliers and theme park owners push off to the Caribbean for their holiday!

You seem to be doing all right and enjoying your holiday anyway! Image

When in Honfleur, don't miss seeing the old harbour:
