Sewells in Spain 2017

Postby raesewell » Fri Sep 01, 2017 8:42 am

Melanie and I are off to Spain, sailing on the 8th September
We are travelling from Portsmouth to Santander then a short hop to Llanes for a couple of nights. Our next stop is Navia for a night, then off to Santiago de Compostela for two nights. Astorga is our next stop then one of my favourites the Hotel Picos De Europa in Las Arenas then Bilbao. We are staying in Bilbao for a couple of nights so we can visit the Guggenheim museum, Bilbao is often overlooked because of its proximity to the ferry.
I'll try to remember to take some pictures.

Having been to France twice this year already and another French trip planned for October, I thought we were well overdue to re-visit Spain as it's been about 4 or 5 years since we were last there.

Have a lovely time. Before moving here for good we toured Spain quite a lot (okay a HELL of a lot), our way of finding out what area 'spoke to us'. Its a fantastic adventure, just you two, the bike and your luggage on the ship, and then spat out the other side to find your way. Nothing like it, can you imagine the 'Package Holiday' bunch doing that? I know you are seasoned, but the thrill is still the same. eh?

One thing, I see you are doing the North. It will be okay for temperatures but the 'green belt' does get probably the most rain. Its a wonderful Country (I see you have been before) so you will be used to the contrasts.

Well done you, have fun!!!!

I'm sure we will enjoy ourselves. We are meeting up with a Spanish guy names Javier in Astorga (Met him on the FJR forum) who lives in Valladolid, he's riding up to meet us and is staying the night. There was talk of him riding to Las Arenes with us but nothing has been planned so far.

Hi
I liked the North even if it was a bit chilly some days, off the more beaten track so more of an adventure

We had a stopover in Valladolid on our way back from Portugal.
Looked like it was worth a visit. Enjoy !

We set off for Portsmouth on Friday 8th September and it was a very very wet journey down To Portsmouth, we had a couple of stops for coffee and lunch on the way. We waited about 30 minutes and then they started loading the bikes onto the ferry. We found ourselves a nice cosy spot for a beer once onboard.
Image

We were well out to sea when the ferry was delayed due to a medical emergency, a passenger had to be winched on to a helicopter for transport to hospital. I don’t know who it was or what was wrong but I wish them a speedy recovery.

The rest of the journey was uneventful. We arrived in Santander at about 7 pm which was about an hour and a half later than expected. The heavens opened and the rain was like stair rods. We proceeded out of Santander at a very ginger pace just happy to follow the cars in front. Once at the hotel we checked in creating rather large puddles in the hotel foyer. The staff were very understanding and fantastic.
After a shower and a change of clothes and a very cheap 3 course meal we found the bar.
Image

The following morning Llanes (Yanez) was bathed in sunshine as you can see here in this secluded cove
Image

Also in Llanes a poor selfie of us at the marina.
Image

We came across a group of Spanish bikers on a ride out.
Image

Here is the bike tucked up for the night in Navia.
Sorry about the quality, but David Bailey I ain’t
Image

We set off from Llanes in light drizzle and it remained like that for the first hour or so.
We stopped in Gijon for a coffee then decided to take the motorway for the rest of the journey.
This was because we made poor progress on the first part of the journey mainly due to almost everyone in Spain driving everywhere at 15 mph. The penalty for speeding must be really harsh, birching, hanging or maybe a public flogging, who knows.

The journey from Navia to Santiago de Compostela was very drizzly with a bit of fog thrown in for good measure. Not the weather you expect in Spain but hey ho, it’s dry in the bars.
We did have some brighter weather as you can see here
Image

We moved on from Santiago de Compostela to Astoga and the weather perked up a bit as you can see above.

This one is self explanatory
Image

I spotted a GTL whist there
Image

And in contrast a Chinese Harley look a like
Image

Also while in Astorga we met with Javier whom I met on the FJR forum.
A really nice man and we both thoroughly enjoyed his company.
Image

A mountain shot on the way to Arenas de Cabrales, and another drizzly day interspersed with a bit of sunshine here and there.
Image

We spent a couple of days in Bilbao and I found a companion for the FJR in the underground car park.
Image

Outside the Guggenheim museum in Bilbao is this very big spider.
Image

In the true tradition of Sods Law once on the ferry the Bay of Biscay was bathed in glorious sunshine.
Image

Back in the UK we stopped off in Alton Hampshire to have a coffee with a very dear friend who took this photo for us.
Image

We are not done touring yet this year, in three weeks time we are off to France with Mike W and his wife for a few days.

Thank you and I hope you enjoyed the write up.

Hi Rae and Melanie,

Thanks for the write-up and photos.

Glad you enjoyed the trip despite the weather!

Did you go into the Cathedral in Santiago?

Irene and I joined the end of a queue of people to go up above the altar thinking we were going to see John the Baptist's bones and ended up getting blessed by the priest who seemed to live up there!

Isn't France closed in October?
