Well here I am folks .................. although at one stage I didn't expect to be !!! :-({|=

The CKD ailment has now stabilised over the past 3 assessments, still at stage 3 [ 2 3/4 to be exact ! ] so a slight improvement, but more importantly, the decline in function seems to have been halted.

That's the good news - now the VERY good news is that I didn't sell my Kay Fighter project ! Although I did sell my 5 spoke wheel conversion, K1100 forks and other goodies while I was having a cull.

That means I am now confident that I can carry on with my project[s] with a reasonable chance of finishing it [them].

And Brian - I STILL have the Airhead parts and now I'm back in circulation, I will go up the garage in the next two weeks and attempt to list what's there. You'll have first refusal.

I know there's crankcases, rods, deep sump, crank, fork yokes - including the elusive cast top yoke version. ALL must go. I've even got a good frame - legal, but no V5. Even though I feel well enough to carry on with my current projects - all the stuff I've been hoarding for "whatifs" must be cleared.

There's also a lot of Kay parts that I won't be using or needing. THERE'S EVEN BEST PART OF A K100 BIKE IN BIG BITS. I'll list everything in the next 3-4 weeks.

So - first task is to get the Kay back from storage and re-assess where I'm at with it. I have started it several times [ always 2nd / 3rd prod ] in the past year or so and still sounds sweet. Especially with the upswept 4 into 1 headers and Yamaha can. tHERE WAS AN ISSUE [ SINCE STORING ] OF AN OIL LEAK. i'M HOPING IT'S THE CLUTCH RELEASE ROD SEAL.

I will be needing a 5 spoke rear wheel [ tyre ] from an R or K S model - 5.5" min.

Maybe also a set of K1100 forks / 3 spoke front wheel as well. I can't be assed to go through the 5 spoke front wheel conversion again !

Happy to swap parts whatever.

After a thorough check over - apart from the aforementioned leak [ still to be diagnosed ] - a couple of wires still to be connected and tested, it's still viable. Even managed to find ALL the scattered parts, including as new and highly polished exhaust down pipes.

So, just needs a final fettle of the body panels [ and replace one side panel - which I have ] paint and general tidy up and that's it - apart from the leak of course !

As the original body panels were handmade [ by ace tin basher Pete Kyte ] in aluminium, I'm still debating whether to have the tank stripped and highly polished along with the side panels. I could do that anyway as a "whatif" as I have a spare tank and GRP side panels .

Either way my mojo is back guys.

Hi
progress! Sounds good.

I think K tank leaks form about halfway along the length where water gathers, I used to think it was only the LHS where bikes were left on the side stand but have since found that tanks rot both siodes if people leave the bike on the main stand

Hi George,

thanx for your continued interest and encouragement.

Fortunately both tanks are leak free [ Fighter still has a gallon or so in it ! ] and more important - dent free, jic I decide to polish one.

I will have to get another 5 spoke [R/K1200S ] rear wheel, but I'm not sure I want to go to all the aggro on the front end to fit a matching 5 spoke - I might simply look for a 3 spoke front end complete with forks / brakes. Will depend on funds, as I'm still progressing my KZ750 Twin Flat Tracker !

I've contacted another member, but jic - has anyone got a complete front end with 3 spoke wheel ? That's forks, yokes, wheel, discs [ not strictly nec. ] and calipers.

Also the aforementioned 5 spoke rear ....... min. 5.5" wide.

Well here we are ....... 2 years and lots of hospital visits later I am now in remission \:D/ from the kidney [ CKD ] issue that threatened to cut me off in my prime [ only 75 guv'nor ].

The Kay Fighter fortunately didn't get sold off when I was anticipating the end was nigh - so fortunately I have reasonable health AND a project to work on.

In the interim I DID sell off the K1100 RS forks and 5 spoke wheel conversion together with all the associated parts ](*,) . Last week I went down to my pal's workshop [ RAM ] where the bike has been stored for the past several years and apart from a HUGE puddle of oil that's developed while it's been stood [ NO oil leaks prior ] - it's exactly as I left it. I'm hoping the oil leak is down to a hardened clutch push rod seal [-o< . Apart from that it was all up and running sweet as a nut and apart from painting just needed a full check over and the front indicator wiring in.Oh yes, and fitting some at the rear, although I hadn't decided what style to go with at the time.

First job will be to check the oil level [ !! ] and fire it up - then I can carry on where I left off.

It may well morph into a Cafe Racer style and again I have the parts - Tarrozi clip-ons and RAASK rearsets. I did have a nice set of Tarrozi rearsets, but they found their way onto my KZ750 Twin 60's style Cafe Racer ....... which again thankfully I stored rather than sold. While I was going through my stash I also came across a brand new RAM full race shock and Progressive fork springs. Add to that 8.8mm and 10mm silicone Hi-Po lead sets and I have pretty well everything I need.

I only really decided last week to carry on [ final all clear - or at least stabilisation on CKD front ] with the project and already I have obtained K1100RS forks, K1200RS front wheel, discs and calipers and a 5" K1200 rear wheel and disc / caliper. I just need to get yet another front spindle made up, but fortunately I still have the drawings AND a lump of St.St. stock bar.

I have NO idea how that first pic became reversed !!!! :-k

Had a really good week collecting the missing parts !! =D>

K1200RS front wheel complete with discs and good tyre, R1200RS rear wheel with caliper, front 4 pot calipers, rear caliper, K1200RS brake lever m/c.

Nearly there and I'm pretty sure I have a decent 170 tyre in my stash somewhere.

That just leaves the front wheel spindle.

Not sure if I posted this before - but I've had a couple of enquiries so here we go - the front spindle conversion - K1200RS wheel to K1100RS forks.

And for those that get all excited about front and rear wheel offest with these wheel combos .... it makes NO DIFFERENCE to the handling. Even BMW give offset values in the OEM manual

BTW - don't take my word for it ...... BMW OEM workshop manual pages scanned for the doubters.

And that's just with a width [ rear ] differential of 3" to 4.5".

Finally fettled the RAASK rearsets where my pal's mechanics [?] had simply hacked off the pillion rest mounts and just left them!

They've now been rounded off and made to look "factory". I was going to use my Tarrozi rearsets, then remembered I'd earmarked them for the KZ Cafe Racer project. Probably have the mounts powder coated to match the wheels and other accents.

All the parts have finally arrived now and all in excellent condition - especially the calipers which don't need rebuilding. The front wheel is a bit scabby, but no biggie as I'm having them both blasted and powder coated.

My " paint stripped and dent free " tank arrived ..... and it was !Couldn't be happier. \:D/

I'll dig the alloy Pete Kyte side panels out of the garage and get the lot polished when my pal gets back to his workshop.

I've also got a set of downpipes that I had highly poished .... then forgot all about !

Yes George - all checked OK.

One of the project bikes I bought years ago had a blob of chewing gum that had been overpainted in the same paint as the tank !!!! With all that effort why not seal the leak properly !! It was literally a pin hole.

Chewing gum is right up there with other essentials of life such as wd40 and duct tape.

I often wonder how they go on in Singapore where it is illegal.

Talking of the Far East. I picked up this beauty on Chinabay for my KZ 750 60's style Cafe Racer ..... I paid £25 for it and it arrived in 7 days.

I bought a very similar item 5 years ago from a well known UK company - cost me £105 !!

I'm ordering another .... you never know when you might need another project. but I'll try it on the Kay to see what it looks like.

I recall many years ago, Bike magazine, some team that raced an airhead chopped the steering head off to align it properly with the back when, as it is an inch offset from the factory.
