2005 1200gs alternator alternative

Postby keiththeoutfitter1 » Wed Feb 12, 2020 10:38 am

Does anyone know of an alternative replacement for the denso 40 amp base-mount alternator used on the 2005 1200gs?
Is it used on any car etc?
Thanks,
Keith

Not much help this Keith, but I don't know.
Never had any trouble with the alternator on my 1200GS

I’m actually enquiring for a friend. I don’t know how but his alternator has seized and they are apparently about £160 from the usual BMW bike breakers.
When he took it off to see if he could free it, he found one of the mounting lugs badly corroded.

Keith I do not know of any that interchange

I know that they corrode within and usually seize / split the casings

If you taketeh OE number to a Starter motor alternator repair shop ?

They may be able to cross reference it

But i am 95% sure that its a BM only fitment

If you Google the part number from Real OEM all the results just list the Hexhead engine

Thanks for the replies, as you say and from my searches it appears to be a BM only fitment for that engine only.

MAke sure and tell him to give the new alternator a LIBERAL coating of ACF 50 before fitting

Hopefully that will keep the salt from corroding and expanding the casing until it cracks
